Yesterday at 4:45 pm a local police officer was at my door.

He said someone from an online forum had called about me. He said they knew a lot about me and I was suicidal.

This is the only online forum I am on. Who pieced info about me together and felt it was ok to do this ?

Luckily my husband came home right after he came and I did not have to be interrogated.

How would you feel if this was done to you !

Because of this I now feel I have to have my account deleted.

Somebody crossed a line, no matter how good you felt your intentions were.

You're absolutely right, Speed. Someone crossed a line...& I'd be pissed off if I were you, too. That said, please don't leave. Even though I don't "know" you, I've been following your posts. I know how much pain & depression you're facing now. If you left, I'd be wondering about your well being. I hope you decide to stay on the boards.
Thanks for this!

Hey Speed3! I'd be angry too. However I'm sure this person had good intentions and was just worried. Maybe you should type in your sig and ask people not to interfere in this way?
Thanks for this!

Speed, I can understand your feeling, but let me reiterate again that it was not I
who called the police.
Thanks for this!

Speed3, I hope you stay. how this could happen is unbelieveable, who even has the time to actually do this to someone else?and what do they get out of it too?I have a few choice words for that person, but can't post them here, or anywhere for that matter!
Thanks for this!

I just saw a comment on Fox News that the FBI will be monitoring chats on the internet, though I don't think that's what happened here.
Thanks for this!

I dont think the mods will give out our information about us here, you might need to think again, maybe you give someone your address or any clue about wherever you live or whoever you are , but if you are suicidal they must have a very good intention why they call the police, they might think you are in danger and they really care about you
Because when you tell someone you are suicidal they might really worry about you, long time ago i was on chat not here and i was suicidal and i tell my friend i was suicidal and i remembered , he cant sleep and think about me all night long while i was sleeping because i took my meds.

I know someone who called the police because someoen harm theirself here too but its only because you are closed and they are worried about you
i am sorry this happened to you

I agree the person crossed the line. It wasn't me who called the police, I don't even have any idea where you are out there in the world. I do agree someone had good intentions but went to far. They should have sent you a message instead.

Some people are extremely good with the internet. My husband had a friend who had his xbox live account hacked. They were then also able to follow his IP address and started hacking into everything else they could find connected to him, and figured out where he lived. They would sent police and pizza men to his house. It was pretty scary to learn how capable people are with hacking.

If someone was that worried about me ,the could have Pm me. Depending on the circumstances I might have even given them my phone number. They went to far to fast.

If anybody is that worried about me. Thank you for the concern. But, please PM first! Having police show up at your house is very scary and embarrassing. All the neighbors want to know what is going on! Plus I was a mess I had not taken a shower and was in my PJ's...

I didn't know that anyone here took it in themselves to do that. I kind of feel bad for whoever called you in....they must feel horribly guilty at this point. However, I'd be pissed as hell if the police visited me regardless of who they were sent by. It is actually making me a little paranoid, because the clues of where I am at now are pretty obvious.

Sheesh! Wow! & Holy Cow!

Sorry your trust was betrayed this way.

I guess this means that no matter how anonymous any of us may think we are online, that it simply isn't so.

That's beyond kinda scary when you think about it!

Thanks for this!

Yes, I'm sort of paranoid, so I keep track of what I say, and with all the things I've said here it should be possible to figure out my identity. When I have some surplus energy I will try to get some info deleted.
Thanks for this!

I was thinking if I should have my current account deleted and open a new. This would be instead of leaving all together. This time around I would be more careful about leaving info that could lead to my identity.

That is what I liked about this site not being afraid of what I was saying. Not so now.

To make things worse the officer that came lives two doors down.
I heard him apologize to my husband, he said when someone calls it in he has to check it out!

No matter how concerned we are about someone it is not our place to get this involved.

I know if it was a moderator they would have sent a PM to me.

This is totally awful that this happened to you, Speed, however well intentioned it was. I'm sure the person who did it feels pretty terrible too.

I really like the suggestion of notifying an admin or DocJohn directly.

I think you are doing the wrong thing here.

You have no control over the intentions of others.

You have control over the information you provide.

I thought that it was impossible to do what this person did to you.

So I went to my profile to see what info is there.

Interestingly enough, my zip code is there. That is fairly identifying. But it should not be available to anybody but the site administration, anyway.

So I will keep the zip code there for now hoping that I would be OK.

Please examine how you could have leaked personally identifying information (PII). I hope the site administration will help you with that. They should be able to do all they can to protect your personally identifying information - I am certain that they are truly committed to preserving PII of all the users of the forum.
Thanks for this!

Hello Speed3,

I'm not a mod so please don't leap on me. But I do have some observations. I don't believe anyone has our information of where we live unless we give that information to someone. Did you give out your personal information to anyone here? Psych Central is a safe place and everyone needs to feel safe here, we are anonymous unless we choose to share our personal information.

Secondly I would like you to think about this. A lot of us here have grown to love you, we've felt your pain and were there for you when your dear son passed away. We all hurt for you. Recently your posts have been on the suicidal side, you've been unable to get help, you want to join your son...

I'll be honest here, if I had your personal information of where you lived (after caring for you) I would call the police. I would let you know first. But I know I couldn't live with myself if you did a suicidal post and I sat and did nothing about it!! Can you see that we care, we don't want you to die so if I had to and if I knew your address, and after checking with you I would have got you some help!

That being said, no I didn't call the police to get you some help because I don't know enough about you or know your personal details. Please don't be upset with people for caring.

Speed, I have had the experience of someone who recognized my writing and began
to try to communicate with me over the internet. It didn't work, but I was recognized by the structure of my writing.

It's possible that the same thing may have occurred in your community. Someone who knows your situation, who may have been reading some of the threads on this forum, could have determined that it was you and knew all about your situation with Jason, etc., and might have known that a psychotic break might be about to occur.

In my view, that's the most likely scenario, frankly. So few of the people here know
virtually anything about anyone else except to recognize symptoms of psychopathy,
depression, bipolar illness, etc.

You might think about that.

i never knew people on line could get hold of your address or even your name unless you intentionally posted them in a publically accessible piece of the site! this is frightening, i use this site because it is an annonymous place to say what i feel/think without the comeback i would probably get if i said it to someone who knows my address etc! maybe i need to rethink whether this site is safe or not

If I think back here and there I have probably had some personal info. Someone would have to go back through my posts and piece it together.

My big thing is who ever this was did not PM me. I would have gladly talked to them. I would have given them my PDOC number. The police was very unnecessary and I feel beyond what another member should do.
