So I went to pdoc today and he prescribed me some Risperdal (Risperidone) but i'm a bit confused.

Isn't that an antipsychotic? I need a mood stabilizer. I've read a bit online, and it says it "can" be used as a mood stabilizer... anyone have experience with this?

Also, the side effects list kind of concerns me..... one of the potential side effects is lactation >.>

that is the last thing i want happening!!! I just don't know the right way to go about this.

I need a mood stabilizer that won't make me worse >.< or more messed up. There's just so much at stake here.

It made me lactate NOT COOL I tell ya.

Idk about it being used as a MS though, sorry, it was added to my MS and AD during a psychotic depression.

Risperdal definitly gets no votes from me.

Anti psychotics are used as mood stabilizers. I was on Seroquel for a long time as a mood stabilizer. I'm still on it but because of various issues I'm in the process of changing medications.

Side effects don't happen to everyone. I know lots of people can take Abilify without problems, but it made me so sedated I could barely function.

I'd suggest talking to your pdoc and telling him or her: Can you please explain how an antipsychotic works as a mood stabilizer because I don't understand how it works and that worries me.

And also ask what the plan of action will be if you have side effects with Risperdal.

Very good as a mood stabilizer, maybe too good. Brought me down out of the worst episodes, but taken daily turned me into a zombie.

No lacatation here, but I don't think I have the equipment for that. lol

I had on it:

- complete asexuality starting at the lowest dose
- Parkinson-like side effects at high doses
- low energy at high doses
- the most horrible acne, and naturally, off drugs, I have always had flawless skin

Since it causes low energy, I can definitely see how it would stabilize the mood down!!

I think the only thing it did NOT do to me was lactation...

Enough hormones and you'd grow breasts and be able to produce milk. The equipment is just sleeping.

Men can have breast cancer. The incidence is low, but it happens. So it must be the case that the equipment is indeed just sleeping.

Most AP's are now approved for bipolar management, aka mood stabilization. It is not unique to Risperdal. It is a general rule.
