Two weeks ago I had an appointment with my old pdoc. But last week I called to make an appointment with a new pdoc at the local psych hospital. (I decided to switch for a variety of reasons, but that's beside the point I guess.)
I had already set up an appointment with the old pdoc before I decided to switch. The appointment is currently set for July 18th. The appointment with the new pdoc is set up for August 12th. I have plenty of refills for my meds to get me through and this is not an issue at all. ALSO! My old pdoc and my former therapist are like legit friends. And I (quite passive aggressively) quit going to see my therapist with not much more than a message to the office machine. So I'm nervous about facing the old pdoc knowing that I kind of dissed his friend. I also recognize that I'm overthinking it... but I can't help it. It's how I do. Would you cancel the July 18th appointment and wait it out for the new appointment 4 weeks later? At the last pdoc appointment my meds were not adjusted other than the addition of PRN Trazodone for sleep.

I personally wouldn't assume that I was going to like the new pdoc more than the old. Best to keep the old pdoc as a safety net in case you want to go back in the future. I changed my mind halfway through a switch and went back to old pdoc.

If your insurance will pay go to both. This way if anything goes on between now and the 18 Old pdoc can help. You can also get your records for your new pdoc. You have about 3-3.5 weeks between each appointment.

There are two ways to see it, in my view. If you were certain when you switched physicians that you had strong reasons for changing, I would cancel the appointment for July 18th and wait for the August 12th appointment, calling my current psychiatrist's office and asking for a transfer of my records to the new psychiatrist so that you will be up to date on everything on August 12th when you see the new psychiatrist.
If you are wavering in your thoughts about wanting a new psychiatrist after having gone to the trouble of making arrangements for a new one, I'd cancel the appointment on the 12th of August and go in the see my current psychiatrist on July 18th to discuss the fact that you think a change would be helpful and get his feelings about it. Let the new psychiatrist's office know that you will be seeing your current psychiatrist for one more visit and if the change is called for you'll be back in touch. Otherwise, I'd just keep the August 12th appointment and request that the current psychiatrist forward records to the new doctor. You need to keep stability in either choice of doctors, and you need to do it so that you have records in the right place at the right time. I wouldn't just drop one without having records transferred. It also keeps the insurance current and stops questions regarding changes that might occur. I say... see them both and see who you like more. You do not need your records to see the new guy. It's good to have a new set of eyes look at your situation.
Ask the new guy his policies for emergency appts, will he do med changed by phone? his refill policies, etc etc. Oh and your Old Pdoc knowing your T personally should not matter at all... Just pick which one you like better ![]()
