I had an issue refilling Abilify for more than a week and so I decided to stop it without consulting my doctor. I don't know if he will agree and may want me to restart it but I know he won't look down on my decision. Anyone else done anything like this? How did your doctor respond?

I can imagine mine would want to know how I felt without it, he doesn't like me being on more meds than necessary. So if you manage okay without the abilify he might decide it's better to keep you off of it

Im ashamed to say ive done it multiple timea. It annoys and angers my pdoc but hes use to me now and we still have a good relationship. He knows i just hate having to be medicated
He really works with me besides one thing..refusing to give me an ssri at any cost

I'm sure your Pdoc isnt going to be thrilled, You have been in a big struggle with your Bipolar for as long as I can remember, You just need to see your Pdoc and be honest.

Maybe keeping all the ducks in a row so you won't have delays in refilling your medications in the future would help ... But I think you might have just wanted to stop taking it?????

Bipolar peeps all over the world have decided the drop a medication just because they can or want too... I have yet to meet someone that hasnt stopped something at some point with out Pdoc approval, I have done it many many times.

Just keep yourself safe and healthy so you can care for your family

It really pisses off doctors, they like to be in control. I never went off mine on my own but when I did a supervised step down, got bad reaction symptoms, and went back to my regular dose without calling him... He wasn't happy when I showed up at the next appointment a month later.

Hi there cashart

Well I am not too sure of the medication of which you speak and I am unsure as to what your pdoc's reaction might be.

Hence I can only tell you a little story on my personal experience. Generally when I tamper with my meds without my own pdocs insight / assisance / knowledge this may result in my pdoc making adjustments. I believe that my pdoc likes me to personally liase with her (and in the past my old pdoc was a him) before attempting such things. I am sure we are not the only ones to have done similar things. It's just that I think they feel its best that we keep tabs and liaise with them.

Thank you for sharing.

Like pretty much everyone else here been there done that too-even though I'm a nurse & should know better-I seem to be getting into a pretty good rhythm with the pdoc I have now & she's been open to me doing slight adjustments to see how I will do-I also keep my tdoc up to date with any changes as well-I don't think I would go off my meds without pdoc supervision again but...it could happen-I just try to stay as healthy as I can & use my best judgement-hope you do well with the changes-take care

Talk to your Dr for sure, i mean there isn't anything he can do anyway? I have a problem with stopping my meds (or overdosing lol) for a week at a time. i get frustrated with them, think they aren't helping, or think i am actually a liar and don't need them. this obviously makes me dr kind of upset. you have a pretty valid reason though, plus abilify costs a ton!

Yes, done similar. Was taking an SSRI sample pack, ran out and went to get filled to find out it was more than $200 so I stopped...told counselor I was not going to take it if it was expensive. Next doctor visit I told him I was no longer taking it and he switched me to Buspar which is great for me. After I came off the SSRI and switched from Depo to lamictal everything improved. The SSRI was actually making things worse so it turned out to help me. I would not stop taking mood stabilizers with BP though. If it does not seem to help, tell your doctor and try something else.
