What is Latuda for? It says it is for schizophrenia, but I don't have that.

It is an antipsychotic. It is approved for schizophrenia, however, your doctor can give it to you 'off label'. I don't know how common off label prescribing is when it comes to purely physical ailments but it seems to be very common within psychiatry. Sort of, maybe this will work?

Ask your doctor why it was prescribed to you.

AP's are prescribed to non SZ patients who have hallucinations ( eg. for bp'ers with psychosis / hallucinations) its also prescribed as a sleep aid. Also heard from my former pdoc that another off label use for an AP is to curb rage impulses...

TBH, I dont agree with prescribing drugs linked to brain atrophy to help someone sleep, as there must most certainly be an alternative... But they are very effective at sedation, so I see the logic even though I disagree with it.

I agree with coco ( Btw welcome back biyotch! I missed the shyt outta u! ) ask your dr why you are supposed to take them.

On second thought, ask your doc if they're sampling the merchandise! Why not just prescribe you a benzo, its what they're for ...

Well, thanks for the welcome.

I'm in a I'm okay with medication phase right now so, why an antipsychotic rather than a benzo or why an antipsychotic for sleep?

Benzodiapines are fantastic short term drugs. Long term? Not so much. Add their abuse potential and addictive qualities and it can get messy even with Ativan. I love Ativan!

I take Seroquel to go to sleep. I've tried various antidepressants to help - no go. Sleeping pills make me high, and I like that kind of high, a lot, so they never last and worse yet - don't keep me asleep. I fall asleep and wake up bright eyed and ready to go 3 hours later. I need my nightly brain reset so, a drowsy drug that knocks me right out without any interesting effects is fantastic and I've probably raved about it before but the increased appetite is amazing! K, so maybe that's an interesting effect but I won't get "high" on going to bed with snack foods.

Yep. I think she is sampling the merchandise! Won't give me klonopin because I am a recovering alcoholic. Klonopin worked great for me, but she won't do it.

Pdoc just told me last visit - latuda to help me sleep if ambien stops working. Said its sedating like seroquel but newer & "better", less weight gain, although more expensive. She said she wants me to stop using the klonopins to go to sleep. :/

One of the symptoms I was given an AP for besides lack of sleep was looping thought processes, I could not get my thoughts to shut up so I could get to sleep. Actually they wont shut up all day. I'm having trouble with that now but dr says no AP til at least Dec because of bloodwork being abnormal.

Ironically enough, I was started with a baby dose of AP to help with sleep, and then I wound up needing it for mania. Now I'm on 2 APs because of the recent episode that bordered on psychosis, but only temporarily (thank God, because I'm eating everything that isn't nailed down or running for the hills). And I'm sleeping like a champion.
