I know I'm bipolar. My world is still spinning around this, after a month of knowing and after I started taking meds, things are looking somewhat good today for me.
But here is my problem, i don't have health insurance, my husband is self employed and the economic depression is not making this a really good time to espend in anything right now. Taking care of my bipolar stuff is really expensive and I feel I could do without the meds. What should I do. I just spend $ 200 in lab work and If I didn't stop my PDoc from getting more lab done, I'd be spending another $ 200 today. And also I have to put up with her saying..."well, you know, this is expensive stuff" I'm really sad about it. I understand, I can't go on without taking care of this, but what if I don't have the money? I really don't know what to do... |

Many hospitals have a Behavioural Health department, check and see if there is one closest to you, they can try to help direct you to who you can work out some sort of payment plan, not knowing your financial status, you can see if the county or state can give you financial assistance.
One of my mom's (is in low income housing) neighbor also of low income (ex Viet Nam vet) told me he had to work stuff through the state which has helped tremendously with reducing pdoc/therapist fees, the medical center in their county with the Behavioural Health Dept works along with those of low to nearly no income. The quality of care from the pdocs are not any different, so that is good to know. I happen to go to the same group he and his daughter go,but I pay 142.00 for 20 minute med monitoring/follow ups. I didn't get personal, but he said they are paying nearly nothing due to his low income. The county/school system was also of help years ago when his daughter first was DXed. I have a brother who lives in another state, that also gets assistance for his needs, I'm not sure but I think his pdoc gets paid through the state or government. I do not know if this has been of any help, but if you can see what is available, don't give up on meds and treatment. Maybe, you can arrange to work with a social worker to help get the ball rolling, inquire with your county's department of mental health/human services. I wish you lots of luck with this. Please take care, DE Can any of our members offer some input? If so, please add any info to biplol's post.

I know some of the drug companies may offer to supply free meds, but I wouldn't know how to go about getting them.

I would start by googling "prescription assistance" and see what comes up. That at least might give you some leads on getting reduced cost or free meds. Also, google the name of your meds and that will give you the drug company that manufactures them. The drug company web sites usually have info. on getting free or discounted meds from them. Also, if you haven't asked your doc about where to get discounted meds, you might try that.
I would try to stick with the meds as long as you can because they really can help a lot. The suggestion to check with the hospital was good. Any hospital should be able to direct you to some local resources, but if you have a psychiatric hospital nearby they would really know who to contact. If you are looking for less expensive therapy, you can always get out the yellow pages and start calling therapists - just ask if they offer sliding scale payment and, if they do, maybe you'll find one you can afford. You might be able to manage it if you only go every other week or once a month. At least it's something. Good luck.

Just found this on another part of this site...
"There are a number of ways you can reduce the amount you pay for prescription drugs, such as: Switching to lower cost generics or different brands with the same or similar effectiveness, taking a shorter-acting drug more frequently, using non-prescription drugs as alternatives and many more. Here is how Rxaminer works: Compare the price of your medication. Review your Drug Cost Analysis report to identify lower cost options. Print the Drug Cost Analysis report and decide with your doctor which medication is best for you to reduce your out of pocket cost Discover Lower Cost Options! http://www.rxaminer.com/consult/index.asp?search=start

If you are not low income and dont have insurance you may be able to get help at your county mental health office. They often will provide services on a ability to pay basis.Often people with an average income can get help because if you were to get insurance now that you have been diagnosed, your psych sevices would not be covered because the insurance company would consider your illness a prexisting condition . so check with your local mental health services . You may need to start at the health department , sometimes the office is within the health deptartment.
My Husband is self employed as well . If it weren't for the county mental health clinic I would be s**t out of luck . Try the county web site first and go from there. Also Check out NAMI. They have a website too. Good luck to you , Sher |

These folks are paying for about $24,000 in meds for me right now, as I have no insurance. It only takes a few minutes to get a lot of help:
www.pparx.org Or 1-888-4PPA-NOW Have the entire list of your meds handy & names of the prescribing docs and you can enter them all in. Many of the programs have printable option where you go to a link and can print the app right then. At least try it, you have nothing to lose. I'd never be able to afford meds otherwise. I haven't worked in a year, and just got turned down AGAIN today for my disability. RainbowFaerie

Do you have insurance, it really is so ridiculous how they make it like 400 dollars and people do not get help because of the big $$$ then our country starts to fall apart not only from that but anyway then they want to help the country! If we would fix the small things like that we would be so much better off! There is also the people blaming it on Bush, hey he has a hard job as it is he is doing his part YOU SHOULD TOO!
