As it stands, it seems that all AP's are now off the table as they all deal with dopamine and this down regulation of dopamine is what is causing a problem with my pituitary regardless that the AP is helping me mentally.

So if you can share your experience with Lamictal and how to avoid the deathly rash it would be much appreciated.

Thanks so much for your help.
I have been on Lamictal for some time. I was first given it to help lessen the depth of my depression episodes and also make them less frequent. I have bipolar so it helps as a mood stabilizer. I have also been on Welbutrin for a long, long time. I've had some deeper depression episodes recently so my dosage of Lamictal was increased by my pdoctor. She said it would help with the depression, and it has. Good luck as you make your med changes.

It seems that from the numerous posts here that Lamictal is a really good med to try. I really hope I have a similar good experience.

I have been on it for 3 years, and still very happy with it. My new dctor explained that I have to take my daily dose in two doses: 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 around lunchtime. He is a neuro-psychologist and he noticed that some of his severe epilepsy patients mostly had seizures later in the day when they took the Lamectal in the morning as a single dose. Anyway, I also take Serequel in the evenings-nothing else makes me sleep and taking it for that reason only. Lamictal is a mood stabilizer so it might be good to have an anti-depressant added on. All the best!

It worked for two years for me, then I developed a throat rash. I always sounded hoarse and eventually my stomach started to burn and I developed gastrointestinal problems. Alternatives migh be Tegretol or Depakote. Preferably Tegretol if you're a female as Depakote isn't easy on female hormones.

I was put on Lamictal a few months ago to supplement the Cymbalta I was already on. I developed Lamictal rash. I hadn't even heard of it. Fortunately I went in to see my GP & he sent me immediately to a dermatologist. She was able to clear it up without any problem. But I was told it can be complicated, or even deadly, if not caught early. I don't believe there's any way to avoid the rash if you're susceptible. The important thing is, if you develop the rash after starting Lamictal, seek medical treatment right away. It's important to catch it as early as possible. As I recall it typically shows up about 4 to 6 weeks after starting on the medication.

Hi, I'm fairly new to Lamictal. I was started at 25mg for 2 weeks, then 50mg for 2 weeks, then 100mg. and I'm now at 150mg. Lamictal has definitely helped with depression. In fact, it helps so much with depression that sometimes I am having anxious hypomania...an awful feeling. BUT I'm trying to hang in there and hopefully the Lamictal at 150mg. will eventually cause my moods to stabilize.
Thanks for this!

I've been on it for around a year. I take 100mg in the morning and 150mg at night. It takes the edge off but I still cycle and have problems. It makes it hard for me to think and do the same as I use it. It messes with my cognitive abilities but other then that no side effects. I think I use the bathroom more because of it too... But those are super minor side effects, other then the cognitive one. Lots of people like it A LOT! It's a great medication.

Lamictal caused me to itch all over my body and have a rash, so I stopped it per pdoc. The itching and the rash immediately vanished.

I took Lamictal for about 5 years from a teen to adult. It helped a lot with my moods, especially once I upped the dose to 400mg a day. Make sure you check your bone density from time to time. It has been said bone density loss may be linked to Lamictal, I was unable to get mine checked while i was on it but a few years ago (about a year being off it) my bones were a little thin on my X-Rays.

Also be careful when starting Lamictal when already in a depressive state. I tried to restart it 2 years after, again, 5 years of pretty great stability, and I had intense suicidal thoughts. I was taking them under a primary care physician, not a psych, so I didn't feel safe continuing. I would get back on it if I could but my current psych doesn't want to take that risk yet, considering my history.

I was very afraid of Lamictal, but it has changed my life. I take it with Zoloft and have reached stability for the first time in 20 years. The rash can be intimidating, but if you titter up slowly and remain vigilant the chances of getting it re super slim.
