The pdoc put me on the generic version of Depakote ER for my new mood stabilizer and Vistaril PRN for anxiety and Insomnia. The Depakote I can't even feel yet (I JUST started 250mg last night, starting 500mg tonight) but what really grates my nerves is the fact that my anxiety has been OUT THE ROOF and the Vistaril does NOTHING. Not only that but my sleep is so jacked up and last night I took one 50mg Vistaril to try to get to sleep and then woke up 2 hours later (as I ALWAYS do) and took a nother one (which is the max dose she prescribed) to see if that was what it was going to take and I STILL woke up 2 hours later. WIDE AWAKE.

GRRRRRR!!

In fact I'm more upset today ON meds than I was yesterday OFF meds. WTF??

Does anyone have experiences with Depakote ER or Vistaril that you want to share? I'm particularly curious as to how long it may take for Depakote ER to kick in and actually make me feel like it's stabilizing my moods. Because right now: I feel nothing helpful at all. And although I know that you can't just expect to feel better right away, it's still VERY frustrating!!!

Are you on 100 mg of Vistaril, I have to take the max does to get me to sleep. It makes me real hyper first, then I drop off to sleep, oddly. Depakote gave me insomnia, I do not like it.

I just talked to a nurse (doc is going to call me back) and she said that maybe I should just give it some time. I understand that the mood stabilizers take time. I get that.
What I DON'T get is how are anti-anxiety meds supposed to be of any help if they don't work fast?? I could take a benedryl for my allergies and feel more relaxed than this.

100mg is the max she gave me for insomnia and it didn't work at all. All I felt was a VERY slight physical tingle for about 5-10 minutes. She said 1 50mg capsule daily as needed for anxiety and that didn't do anything either.

Give it some time just to please them, then ask for something else to sleep. Vistaril has only worked for my mild insomnia and Depakote gave me such bad insomnia that they didn't work together. I would give it a few days and then ask for something else because yes, an anti-anxiety med should work right away. I think "give it time" is their way of dodging that it isn't working.

I also have Propranalol for tremors that Lithium used to give me, and the doctor said that she liked it for anxiety...but since I already had a bunch she didn't print me out any new papers so I only know how many I am supposed to take if I have tremors, not anxiety.

Vistaril worked to take my agitation away when I was manic but never helped in a panic attack or low grade persistent anxiety. If it doesn't work if ask for something else. But the depakote really will take time, which you know.
