Do you mean "The Silver Lining Handbook"? I think I saw that on a thread, but that may not be the one you're talking about.

The movie is good and the acting is great. I'd encourage you to read the book too. The narrative is that much more strong and heartfelt.

I watched of two minds recently and really liked it. I wish someone would make a better documentary about borderline personality disorder. they're all older and with stiff doctors describing symptoms or bored looking patients sitting in boring interview rooms.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but some people speculate that Jennifer Lawrence's character -- Rosalyn Rosenfeld -- has a mental illness, possibly bipolar disorder. Lawrence said of her role, “She’s a manic-depressive alcoholic, and I couldn’t wait. Plus, I got to make out with Christian Bale.”

The director, David O. Russell, has a son with bipolar disorder. I read an article awhile ago which mentioned that this influenced his work.

If you see the movie, it's pretty clear she has some kind of personality disorder. Probably BPD. She fears abandonment, makes empty threats, and is easily affected by things. The last part wouldn't be bipolar because bipolar moods aren't affected by external stuff. There were several other movies on that list (and in other categories) that were questionable...

I'm not saying that the character is or isn't bipolar, but that statement is not true. Bipolar mood swings can certainly be triggered by environmental factors, albeit possibly to a lesser degree than in BPD. BP might have a genetic basis, but environmental triggers can affect swings. For example, a few hours of missed sleep can sometimes trigger a hypomanic episode in someone with BP.

Besides, diagnostic criteria are vague and sufficiently problematic that countless people are regularly misdiagnosed. I don't think it's possible to accurately diagnose a character in a movie based on less than an hour of total screentime anyway.
