This thread is interesting, looks like no one was diagnosed as child -- teen years or order. I'd be curious to know if those diagnosed as teens are younger...in other words, for those diagnosed past their 20s when when where you diagnosed? 90s, 2000, 2010s? Would be interesting to see if there are more diagnoses of people at younger ages and people that have older diagnosis, if they were diagnosed later in life than teens.

Does this make any sense? Guess my data geek side is coming through.

Had a suggested diagnosis of bipolar at 31, ignored it and then got diagnosed again this year at 33. Started displaying symptoms around 16 but was treated for depression - had a very 'interesting' lifestyle throughout my 20's (still paying it off!) so the medication is a welcome respite.

In my early 20's, but I knew some things about me were "not okay" by the time I was 5 or 6.

Misdiagnosed over and over since 18. Properly diagnosed at 24 in 2011 with a manic episode.

I was diagnosed when I was 12. My mother, of course, was horrified and thought it was a misdiagnosis because I was so young. I've heard that from a lot of doctors, that 12 is too young to really say. But I was diagnosed again at 15 and then again at 18, so clearly someone knew what they were talking about, even if they didn't know how to properly go about treating me. I was pumped full of meds meant for a 20 year old adult.

So, I wanna know... what's everyone's story?

I was 24 when I was diagnosed in 2008 but it definitely existed before that.

I was diagnosed with clinical depression when I was 32. I was 48 when diagnosed as Bipolar I and at 62 It's been changed to Bipolar II. Predominately depressed for most of that time with only two manic disasters I would rather forget.

I know I exhibited symptoms since I was 10-12ish, but mostly the depressive ones. Self harm and avoiding or forgetting to eat since 13-14, also several episodes of conversion disorder that landed me in the ER. First suicide attempt at age 15 (mostly because of mother's abuse), but couldn't get psych treatment since abusive mother was trying to withhold care and also threatening to take full custody of me and my sisters if something happened to me at my dad's house. Later Dxd with MDD when I was able to see a therapist. I personally fired a therapist at 15 in some not-nice terms because she said I should be thankful from my mother's care.

First (probable) hypomanic episode at age 16 that lasted most of my senior year of high school (I also had a lot of repressed memory stuff going on there, too), wasn't recognized because my teachers just thought my sudden inability to sit still in class (or shut up) - that year I often paced in the back of the class unless we had a test (and got teased a lot by other students) while doing my work was just kind of quirky and nothing to worry about. I got irritable as hell a lot that year even though that's pretty uncharacteristic for me - and was suddenly not shy and reserved and ended up (loudly) arguing with one of the girls that had picked on me for years during class and I guess the teacher liked me because I didn't get in trouble. I ended up sewing a ballgown for prom by hand.

First psych hospitalization at 17 for sui attempt at college. Still have nightmares and panic attacks if I think too much about it. That next semester was a train wreck of instability and med changes, second hospitalization (somewhere else, thank god) for med changes. Doc there said it was likely I had BP after examining my history closely and the fact I once panicked about having to stay there longer and almost threw a bolted down table but didn't want to give me that dx because laws in my state about having to disclose that to the MVA and the fact I was only 17 she didn't want to be wrong and have me go through the MVA crap. Also she didn't recognize eating disorder by that point and actually actively encouraged my behaviors.

Dxd with BP 2 and anorexia a couple months before I turned 18 by probably the only person in his practice that believed bipolar 2 exists.

Depressive symptoms started at about 13 years old. Mild manic symptoms soon followed.
By 19 years old I was hospitalized for LSD induced psychosis, but no clear DX, they guessed bipolar, but weren't sure.

At age 32, I had a severe mania that lasted for months and climaxed in a full manic psychosis of epic proportions.

Diagnosed bipolar 1 since then by three different pdocs.
