Hey everybody,
I have been on Lamotrigine for about 4.5 years and have hit a plateau in my treatment. I know I must either increase my dosage(sitting at 200mg) or change meds completely. I was wondering before I look into other med options has anyone experienced severe acne or drastic change in your skin since going onto Lamotrigine. I always had clear skin all through high school and never once worried about acne. After going onto Lamotrigine at 18-19 years old my skin just exploded and I have struggled for the past 4.5 years to get it under control. I know this isn't a life threatening side effect but it truly affects my self esteem and relationships and if it is the meds and I have an opportunity to try something more beneficial I may just begin looking into other med options completely.

I never heard of that as a side effect, but I suppose it could be.

With a lot of research I did find it listed as a side effect but it isn't the more commonly advertised. It ties in with the skin irritations and risk of rash that can come with Lamotrigine. Maybe it's just me and the stress of things that has occurred since diagnoses. I just felt it would have stopped after all this time.

I tried Lamictal several years ago and got horrible acne from it. If you Google it, it seems like a pretty common side effect.

Yep! I already get acne sometimes but it's usually only on my chin and occasionally on my forehead. But since being on lamotrigine I did have a slight increase in pimples; now I get small breakouts on my cheeks and forehead and have it even worse on my chin however my doctor has given me a vitamin a cream (tretinoin) and it's helped a lot so far

Try zinc methionine, 30 mg a day at bedtime. Your skin should clear up in two weeks, the zinc will also help with depression. Any form of zinc will work for the acne, but zinc mono-L-methionine sulfate (a/k/a L-OptiZinc) is the best form to take for psychiatric needs.

I have had terrible skin problems sine I started taking lamotrigine. I've been on it nearly a year now. I hate it! I have acne I've never had before, a rash (not THE rash, just the irritating, itchy one), dry and oily skin all at the same time (like a thick layer of nasty) and a sharp increase in dead skin cells everywhere. I hate this side effect and it isn't working for me. I can't wait to switch my meds!

I've recently switched from high tech, expensive skincare products to simple old formulas for sensitive skin. Purpose face wash and Cetaphil lotion. Along with a low concentration glycolic acid for exfoliation, It's completely cleared the little breakouts I have had since starting meds.

I didn't know you could hit a plateau with Lamotrigine. That would be a shame because I have had such good results with it. It's my wonder drug. As for acne, I had a terrible time before but since has cleared and I have great skin now. May be it is the skin irritation side effect but surely after all this time it would have adjusted itself

Plzsti, I was the same way with it when I first started, I felt amazing(not manic) and happy and just "healthy" I did really well on it for about a year and a half and then it started to lose it's magic, since then I have been prescribed numerous add ons that have not worked and now it feels as though I'm not even taking medication, it literally has zero affect on my mood swings or depression. I know I am still able to increase my dosage but it's a waiting game until I can get a Pdoc again...

nbritton, I will definitely try that! I will speak with my Naturopath about zinc mono-L-methionine sulfate specifically.

When I was on Lamotrigine I had terrible acne, but I was also on Seroquel and Risperidone. When I went off the Lamotrigine it got a bit better, and when my testosterone dose was lowered it got much better. I still get pimples, but it's so much better than it was.

I've been on lamotrigine for ten years...it's a fantastic drug for me. I'm.tapped out at 400mg a day. One 200 in am.and another 200 at bedtime. I have these small pimples on only one side of my face. They just won't go away. I had no idea it could be the drug. I'm not going to go off of it because of the acne cause it does wonders for my mood stabilization. I think I might try the zinc too. I love these forums cause they are so helpful. Thanks you guys!
