I cane into work today in a good mood. I said hi to everyone when I came in. then as I was on my way to do something my supervisor asked me to get her something. immediately felt the anger rising up. Its obviously not a big deal but my mood is totally different now. one of my coworkers noticed and said oh she's bipolar haha. like its some kind of joke. I wonder what would happen if they knew the truth. not that ill be telling them

I understand, people are so judgmental and there is still such a stigma on mental illness. My own family doesn't understand, and I get "punished" when I am having an episode.
Thanks for this!

Someone called me out at my last job, as a "joke." I was in a mood, so I responded-yea, I am bipolar, so what! Surprise-Wished I wouldn't of done it. While most people were cool, the news traveled fast and some acted weird to me. I got along well with the majority of my co-workers but any time I responded to anything without a smile after that, someone always asked if I forgot my meds that day

Some people are really jerks. I'd like to see them treat someone with cancer that way.

It aggravates me to no end when people say stuff like that. It's not a joke. And yeah, you can't really tell people you are because they do treat you differently. And look at you differently. I've had someone say the "Oh you forgot your meds didn't you" thing also. They never said it again after that because i'm pretty sure they could see the rage in me. It hurt me also... It would be nice if people wouldn't be complete butt heads sometimes.

Doesn't sound like you work with the most mature people.

I just avoid these kind of things. Luckily I get to work alone most of the time, so I don't have to rub shoulders with co-workers that much.
A couple of my friends know I'm bipolar, but they don't seem to really care or even understand what that means. So it is ok for me.
I even joke about it myself sometimes... humor is good medicine.

I don't work there/ with them anymore. I start a new job tomorrow, I plan on keeping tight lipped about my bipolar at this place for sure!

I'm currently signed off work, I received an email from my boss pointing out how poor my performance has been. He also said they have given enough leeway regarding my personal circumstances. I email back stating my personal circumstances is actually an illness. So hurt.

You are right. I agree that many people don't get Bipolar or Depression as an illness. Yet they act as though they know better. I've come across people in different places who have negative judgemental views dismissing bipolar or depression as real illness .

I avoid telling anyone about my illness. Some people think bipolar means just daily moodiness such as Pms. Luckily (?) I work in a call center right now and only have to interact with callers. Whom I can "accidentally" hang up on if they're rude. My biggest problem is not doing anything all day while waiting for my night shift to start. My husband barely understands my depression and thinks I'm all better when I'm manic. Go figure.

It hurts to hear people crack stupid jokes about people being bipolar when most of them don't even have any idea what bipolar is or how it affects people. But it seems like people don't want to understand. So yes, it's probably better to keep it to yourself. Sucks it has to be that way, but until people stop thinking that bipolar people are all psycho chainsaw murderers, we should probably stay underground with the rest of the undesirables for our own emotional safety and that of the people we hold close to us, like our children. Nobody wants to be labeled as being crazy and for most people that is how they feel about bipolar.
