Fascinating. No wonder most families have at least one ancestor who spent years institutionalized. I have done a lot of research on my great-aunt...she was placed in Creedmoor (Queens, NY) at the age of 19 (in 1929) and remained in the institution until the late-1950's.

Sadly, there were many times when a member of a family who was "different" - eccentric, slightly mentally ill, a spinster (BIG reason), a middle-aged or older wife who was in the way of an affair (another big reason), etc. and the family didn't want to care for the "affected" family member. So some reason was found to institutionalize the person.
