Hello, since my present diagnosis his cyclothymya...after a few years of being followed by pdoc and since I've been during this time trying all kind of medication. I was wondering and hope it's ok to ask this question:

Of all medication combinations what works best for you. I mean what is a good for being able to not have ups and downs so often and being at a reasonable functional level.

So far in the past month for me: my doc has told me to stop antidepressant when I was in hypomania cycle..I started to take some antispychotic medication.just a few days but stopped and started divalproex..

I'm on week 4 of sick leave..have gone from hypomania, to veggie, to angry, to sad and now I'm just dizzy and flat. Doc would like me to take the antipsychotics but they make me zombie..so if possible give me some cues I just want to avoid depression and get back to being able to work.
thank you. by the way the antidepressant does help when I'm felling depressed but looks like it's not good for me..so how I'm I suppose to get over this part ..Cause I know I alway to the same thing..been doing it for years..up, grr, crash.
thanks for info

Hello Mimielan: I don't have the answers you're seeking. Hopefully there are some other PC members who will see your post & can be more helpful.

I was curious about your stopping your antidepressant when you're in hypomania. I don't know allot about this stuff. But I've never heard of simply going off-&-on an antidepressant at different times. Are you on a very small dosage? I take 120mg of Cymbalta per day (the highest normal dosage.) There's no way I could just stop it cold turkey, so to speak, & then restart it again even a day or two later...

Best wishes...

Hi. I don't have cyclomania but I thought I'd throw in my two cents worth of AD experience.

The only time my AD was tapered off very quickly was when my PDOC said I was having a mixed episode or beginning to show signs of hypomania as he said the AD could make symptoms even worse. I don't remember stopping cold turkey but certainly tapering down rather rapidly.

I've recently been going through a depressive phase and my PDOC upped my antipsychotic - seroquel - from 50mg up to 400mg.

Hopefully you see your PDOC again soon to discuss your current mood state.

When I have a crisis I call my clinic to explain..than they give me advice or my doctor calls me back. after asking questions..she wanted me to come to the clinic the next day until then I was to start taking my seroquel again..when I saw her she told me to stop the antidepressant, she upped the seroquel and sent me for blood work. so I guess it's not really cold turkey..it's was sort of replaced and it did slow me down.

yes I did taper down..within 2 days I think..and did start the seroquel at a low dosage 50xr than after a few days 25 regular than I just cut it in half and it slowed me down, then i started the divalproex. but when I took seroquel..the last time it was combined with topomax and i felt like a vegetable with no brain..so I'm just so afraid to try again.

Being zombified is not necessarily a bad place to be as long as you are functional and able to work. Over time the med can be replaced with one that works better for you. IOW go for whatever works that makes you stable. This should be your top priority.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks you everybody who has replied. I'll just keep trying what the doc says and really hope that eventually I'm on the right combo that help me maintain a decent stability.
