I'm bi-polar and my outlet is a lot creative stuff.

Sometimes my creativity goes in hyper drive and the only way for me to get a break from myself and my mind is going to sleep. Sometimes my mind goes so much I just pass out.

is there a link between creativity and bipolar?

I think BP just has a tendency of kick-starting the things in us that we feel we can do. When Hypomania sets in we just need an outlet. For some it is working, for others it is creating.

I have read before that the bipolar "population" are more creative than the "general population" if you had to do a statistical analysis on it.

Don't ask me to quote the source because I can't remember.

Just relaying something I once read.

And anyway, if Albert Einstein posted that as his status update on facebook, then we know it must be true

I am a creative person doing photography and writing at university. For me it is definitely a way to communicate the emotions of my highs and lows (and mixed). I feel things intensely and need to get it out or I will burst.

In college I excelled in my written English classes. I still write short stories and when I do write letters the recipients will sometimes write back saying "well I can't write a letter like you can". I'm not tooting my own horn trust me I'm not that type. I am crafty as far as crochet and homemade wreaths and decorations. My daughter who I'm watching very closely for the bp signs I displayed at a young age is an amazing little artist already. I'm currently working on some info packs about bipolar for my therapist and somewhere in the it said that people who are bipolar have a major tendency towards creating and also that a major percentage of bp people have an above average IQ.

I think you're right hellboy! Jackson Pollack (sp?) was bipolar 2 as well and struggled with alcohol because of it.

I get into creative periods and can't seem to stop making things. Lol When I crocheted, I made everything from dog sweaters to dolls. Then depression hits, and I don't make anything.

It makes sense to me that if you have a creative bent, you'd be more creative on an "up-swing."

Yeah...I never do much on a down swing. When I'm balanced or hypomanic I definitely get more ideas and want-to as far as projects. I have to list them as the ideas come and weigh the pros, cons and cost of each one to figure out what I can accomplish and what I can't.

There have been articles and books written about this subject.

My guess is that bi-polar doesn't likely convey creative or intellectual gifts to the afflicted, not automatically anyways. However, in a sustained hypomanic or manic state that doesn't end in total self destruction its very possible that a great deal will get accomplished and some of it might be brilliant. A person with some gifts might really have their gifts blossom through a manic episode.

Someone pointed out to me that they can tell I'm on the verge of mania because my memory and mental acuity is becoming much sharper. They enjoy my being energetic and engaged but worry that they may find I have broken into their house to write REM lyrics on their walls in my feces. I exaggerate a bit in the last sentence but only a bit.

Mania can bestow extra creativity or extra focus. Its not a force that is in any way reliable. Aside from mania do I think the average person with bi-polar is more creative than your average non-bi-polar? Mostly no, or a slight slant towards bi-polars being a bit more creative, But you'd expect people who live through that intensity to pick up a few skills along the way, wouldn't you?

I think we often are...and sometimes we believe ourselves to be even more creative than we really are.

I go thru spurts. The norm for me tho is mental dullness with ideas here and there. I think the better the mood the better the flow of ideas and productivity. I just bought knitting needles and thought they were crochet needles so am pretty sure it just pushes us without necessarily having any creativity in the first place lol.

I believe they most certainly can be. Search people, past and present, who have or had BP. The list is long, and of course the list is of well known, talented, and exceptional people.
Thanks for this!

I read Kurt Cobain was, and the singer of Green Day is, too. That's just stuff I've read. Who knows if it's true.

Im a lefty, a musician, a song writer as well as poetry, an artist and a lover of art and music...

I think there really is something to it. Maybe people who have active creative brains are more susceptible to hypomania and bipolar disorders?

I can only speak for me. I use to be very artistic and actually work as artist for short time. I am still very creative, but in different ways. I see things most do not. I can come up with things out of the air. It makes me who I am. As for the racing mind. I go to sleep and the brain does not seem to stop. I am up and can recall what my brain was thinking the entire time I was trying to sleep. Don't remember what it was like to not have numerous thoughts or something going on in my head.
