I got the mirena (progesterone IUD) last week, and my mood has been crashing ever since. There are situational factors too, so I'm not sure if the Mirena has caused it. I looked it up, and it says 5% of people will have mood swings or get depressed. But I discussed it with my pdoc and GP, and they both thought it would be fine. I think it was a terrible decision, and I wish I had stayed with copper, which was what I had before. Has anyone else had bad experiences with Mirena and mood? It's not supposed to be contraindicated in bipolar, but I think maybe it should be.

Also, my pdoc increased my wellbutrin a couple days ago because of I'm getting depressed. Since the increase I've been feeling nauseas, no appetite, and spaced out. I don't know if that's the wellbutrin increase, or hormones from mirena, or something else.

I want this out now! Worst idea!

Mmm.... the mirena is very good because if you are someone that suffers with heavy periods, you can end up having no periods. Can't say I have heard of issues with mood with the mirena but everyone is different. It's up to you, there are other contraception methods and if you were happy with the copper, go back to that.

I had issues with my moods when on mirena. I had to get it taken out after a couple/few months. GL

Yep I got sent into a wicked mixed episode with severe OCD after I got the mirena put in. I was in and our of hospital for about 6 months, I had constant pain, bleeding, was completely and dangerously suicidal, lost my boyfriend, my work suffered, and I was constantly anxious. Had a few med changes during this period.

Then month 7, the pain went away, the bleeding went away and my mood leveled out. Now I have decreased medication to almost what it was before the mirena. No periods is fantastic, no more PMDD for me. I havent been suicidal in months when it used to happen every month at that time.

It was a rough trot for the first 6 months, but I was warned it was a risk and now I am continuing to get better and better. Hopefully I now stay stable hormonally for the next 4/5 years. At least now that the hormones are stable I can work on my issues without being in crisis every period.
