Hello,
I'm writing you to ask you the following: How do you know, with absolute certainty, whether someone has bipolar disorder? I guess the most accurate and free-of-error way would be to have a genetic (genome) testing? I'm asking because my sister was hospitalized and diagnosed with bipolar disorder this year, and I would like to know if that could happen to me as well. I would like to know if I'm at risk, in other words, if I have "latent" bipolar disorder, that could be triggered by something. Also, I would like to make sure that my sister INDEED has bipolar disorder, that it is not a "misdiagnosis". So again, what is the best way to know without any doubt that someone has bipolar disorder, or is at risk at having bipolar disorder? Please help! |

Hi,
There is no real genetic or blood diagnostic test for bi polar disorder. It is all based on symptoms. If it is in your family you are at higher risk but that doesn't mean you have it. There is most likely a genetic/ biological component to it but it is not understood well enough to have such a test. You want to watch for symptoms.
