My pdoc put me on lamictal 2 weeks ago. I started taking it and after a week I could tell it was helping. The last day or two I've been feeling restless and like I should keep moving. Then today I took it again and this time I had/am currently having a panic attack. I am freaking out. Luckily I have lorazepam for just such an occasion and I am trying to make light of it as I know I'm not actually dying but I'm going back to my pdoc tomorrow to see how lamictal has been working and it really helps but now I'm scared if she ups the dose and I start having panic attacks all the time. I couldn't handle that. Has anyone else had this happen and if so does it get better?
I should add that I've been on 300mg of wellbutrin for a year. Maybe a reaction together? If so, why did it take two weeks?

Ok my panic attack is about under control but I'm feeling jittery and restless. Like I need to lift weights or keep myself busy but I don't know if I have the energy to keep up with my body. Make sense?

Hi there,

To me, it sounds like akathisia. The same thing happened to me when I started taking Geodon. My doctor put me on an anti-seizure med, Cogentin, and that relaxed my body and I didn't have the problem anymore. Perhaps if you talk to your pdoc, he may be able to prescribe something for you that will enable you to continue taking Lamictal since it seems to be working for you.

One difference I must note is that my symptoms started immediately when I went on Geodon, so I don't understand why it would be happening to you 2 weeks after starting Lamictal. Maybe because we all metabolize meds at different rates. I'm not sure.

Anyway, I'm glad you are going to talk to your pdoc. And I hope he/she can help you out with your problem. I wish you all the best.

I havent had issues with Lamictal like you describe. Under the listed side effects it does list anxiety as affecting 4% of people, so it is possible that your panic attacks and restlessness are in that category. It may also be that your body has been slow to metabolize the lamotrigine. Whatever the case I am sure your Pdoc is the best person to help you.

In the meantime do whatever you have to do to stay safe. The feelings and side effects may be extremely unpleasant but you can survive them. If you feel too unwell or unsafe then take yourself to ER and get their help.

Please let us know how you go with the Pdoc. As a fellow Lamictal patient, I am curious as to what the cause of your symptoms is

So I went to my pdoc and she said that the panic attack is just a part of my disorder. I should be fine with that. The restlessness and inability to sleep should smooth out over time and to try benadryl before she'll prescribe me anything for that. Which I do not want to be on! So I'm good with that. Now I just need to make sure I watch out for the dreaded lamictal rash lol.

Oh and she bumped me up to 50mg of lamictal and took me down to 150mg wellbutrin (instead of 300mg)

I can understand your concern, the taking of a whole new drug in your system....what will it do??? Can cause anxiety on its own; waiting, watching, hoping, dreading, the not knowing. Been there done that.

I hope it works well for you for it has me.

And to Bitter2014 I took it today without a panic attack. I did cheat and take a lorazepam first just in case but if I was going to have one due to the lamictal, the lorazepam would have only barely masked it so I would have been able to tell. I think it's a case of me thinking too much and feeling every side effect and blowing them out of proportion. The lorazepam calmed me to the point I wasn't worrying and thus no panic attack and no restlessness....yet

I had the same thing. The 150 wasn't working so my primary care doc doubled it which doubled the hypo mania (or mania depending on who you ask). I was just living with it and ruining relationships, etc until my marriage started falling apart and I sunk into severe depression. That made me to see a pdoc and now here I am. Feeling better and hoping this will continue to work for me
