Last night was the first time that my new boyfriend has experienced me in a mania. I told him that I have bipolar disorder but I don't really think he understood/believed me. Either way I had a really bad manic episode and he wants to still stay with me, but all of his friends think I'm absolutely crazy and the thought of being around them is killing me. How do I handle this? Also any advice on how to explain to him what happened? I told him but I don't think he really understands.

Hi Sammyspiker
Welcome to PC. I am so sorry that you had a manic episode and you are now worried about your relationship. The best way to handle this is to be honest with your new boyfriend and help to educate him about bipolar. Most people don't understand much about mental illness so hopefully he will want to research this and it will help him understand. Best wishes. |

Hi Sammy,
There's not much you can do but show him you're trying to get stable. Most likely he'll come around and his friends will warm up to you again. They just don't like to see their friend hurt. Don't try to explain it or say it wont happen again because it will. Just hug him, say sorry, tell your therapist or psychiatrist.

Welcome Sammy-sorry you're having to deal with this. It's hard to explain/describe mania to someone that has never seen it-it is good that your boyfriend is trying to understand. Try not to be too hard on yourself & look at this from a medical perspective-having a manic episode in front of someone is really no different than if you were diabetic & had an attack of hypoglycemia-sometimes we do all the right things & we still get sick-if you have a tdoc you might want to bring this up-it could be helpful for a third party that is familiar with your situation to talk with both of you. Take care

The mania started last night or progressed? Hopefully you are getting help or getting better. Good luck!

I hope you can get the mania under control, how do you feel today?
Its good you have a supportive boyfriend, trust him. All males think women are crazy to an extent so dont even worry about his friends. Get yourself stable before it gets out of control and you lose the one you love. |
