Hi! This is my new thread here.

I've received the diagnosis of bipolar disease in May 2014 and since then I've been taking Lamotrigine 100 mg (in process of increasing the dosage). I've also been taking Citalopram 40 mg since 2011 because of panic atacks, anxiety and depression.

In the end of year my doctor prescribed Topiramate because I was having a lot of episodes of headaches and insomnia from the Lamotrigine. Topiramate would also help me because it's a mood stabilizer and would help me lost some weight too (which I've gained in 2014 with all the changes with my medication).

I started in a small dosage (25mg), but now (one month later) I'm taking 100 mg daily and the depressive mood that I think it's giving me is just killing me! I sleep for hours and hours and when I wake up, I just wish I was dead. I'm completely numb. I'm thinking of going back to 25 mg, because in the first days, Topiramate helped me a lot with the insomnia and the binge eating.

Any of you guys have ever used Topiramate and would like to tell me what it is like for a bipolar person to take this medication?

Thanks a lot!

Carol

I took it and the only thing it did for me was make me lose weight. Didn't touch the mood swings at all.

The main issue for me is not the sleepiness, but the deep depression that I've been experiencing. I had suicide thoughts during the last couple of weeks and couldn't get hout of the house, although it's warm and the sun is shining outside (I'm from Brazil and it's summer in here now) and I could be enjoying my vacations...

I wanted to know if is that something that most people experience with this dose of Topiramate (100 mg) or am I the unlucky one?

Maybe you went up to 100 too quickly. Maybe 50 would be better. I take 100 but im a pretty big girl. The highest i took was 400, but i was literally falling over. I hardly noticed 25 mg. If it was effective for you, then why not stay there? I had other epilepsy issues that the med " found" and is controlling - if you dont have those issues, then the full force of it is being experienced.

I talked to my doctor and we decided to go back to 25 mg for now. I don't have epilepsy issues, I started taking Topiramate because I was having insomnia and headaches as side effects of Lamotrigine, and also because I gained some weight in the last year due to anxiety and depression. I think 25 mg helped a little with this issues, so maybe I'll discuss with my doctor and stick with this dosage.

Thank you so much for the reply! It really helped me
