Hi there
I am new here and this is my first post.

I was diagnosed with bipolar II in July after a few years of being misdiagnosed with MDD. My Pdoc and I have been working on the correct medication cocktail and I believe I am edging toward stability with Lamictal and Seroquel. However, I still have boughts of pretty strong irritabiliy. My Pdoc suggests using Xanax when this happens, but Xanax makes me very sleepy and unable to function.

I am wondering if anyone has used medical marijuana for irritabiliy and if it has been effective without excessive sedation.

I am concerned it could worsen depression which is a big problem for me.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

hi tinyshadow
well the thing is, marijuana affect people in different ways. have you smoked it before? how did it make you feel? that would be the best determiner? but how it impacts me and how it impacts you are going to be totally different. and then the different strains are going to determine how it makes you feel as well. i smoke once a year at a music festival. it makes me SO HAPPY that i understand why so many people use so often. i wonder why i am not a regular user. lol. i definitely can say i am not irritable when i use. but i get high from several different people and one guy likes to give me different experiences. so one time i got high and i was totally angry. while at a show i had zero tolerance for people running into me and cutting me off. i had to leave. it sucked. that definately wasnt a happy high. i was very irritable. and you are not going to know how it will affect you until you smoke it and then you have to ride it out. some has made me very anxious. but i have never gotten depressed. pot is a hallucinogen, not a depressant. welcome to psych central. you will find we have several forums where you can post about your concerns and receive feedback from other members. you will get a lot of support here. again, welcome

I don't know anything about weed, but I watch a lot of tv shows.

Indica vs. Sativa, one calms you and one makes you hyper.

How about drug interaction of weed with your existing meds?

I am concerned with the interaction with meds I'm sure my Pdoc would not approve.
I haven't smoked in a long time. Certainly not the strong strains available in clinics. I have tried some indica candies that seemed to mellow me out a bit. Similar to Xanax. Just worried about depression mostly.
Thanks for the replies!

It's a choice, some people can and have no problem at all , some flip out . I have smoked before on psych meds and never had a problem( I used it more for pain relief) I have smoke on no psych meds and been fine. I smoke maybe twice a year... It's illegal and I can afford it . lol

It's a choice.. One thing , make sure your with good friends and they can watch and make sure your safe in case you have a bad reaction

I use medical marijuana for some PTSD symptoms and anxiety. It helps a great deal, but it knocks me out completely if I smoke it (indica AND sativa). If I use edibles very sparingly, it takes the edge off without too much sleepiness. Just enough so I can function and deal with my emotions.

hi

smoke will work for this .......make u less 1 step away from biting a person head off for something small and meaningless .......as for depression u have little to no worry about that several of the chemicals in weed is a anti depressive ......along with AED/AC meds so it works good for bipolar

if u are in a state with legal shops ......walk in and ask the person be hide the counter for something in 3/4% cbds and a midlevel 10/14% thc ........if they have them for sale ask for some CBD cheeba chew (cbd will not make u high but it will make it easier for u to deal with every day life) ....if u do get something like food or candy find out the mg of THC if it is 100mgs eat parts and see how u are do not eat the whole thing at once......lollipops u lick/suck on for a short time do not bite unless it is 30 mg 100mg will crush u they are ment for 5 mins of sucking and put away for 6 hours if u bite it u will not like it (unless u do )

if u got to go from the street to get it u want middies .....ask the person if they have medical grade stuff in the loop (stay away from nugs/hydro this will be to strong of THC that is what flips ppl out first time they have panic attack )....if they offer u Swag or brick say no thanks that stuff is mostly trash with very very little cbds and 7% thc

it works but u need to find the right strains of smoke for your needs .........shops or medical growers are your best bet they are not making crush u smoke (well they are but they label and knows strains better) ........street deals is all about the THC they have very little medical use in them (unless it is a medical grower supplying)

I doubt you will have a prob with med interaction. Benzos would prob interact more honestly
And also u can get medical marijuana for psych issues in some states.
I dont smoke because of paranoia but i have heard many ppl say it helps them . Case by case basis i think

I vape when I am having anxiety issues or irritability problems I also asked my pdoc if there would be any bad side effects with smoking and taking my meds and she told me that the combos I am on that I would be fine. Now I have several vaporizers that I now use instead of smoking it cause it is cleaner and better tasting. You have to be careful using some edible I mean you might see something that is the size of a regular Snickers but it has like sixteen servings. I make my own edibles just for myself cause they are to strong for others. You can also Google all this stuff to get a better understanding of what strains you could use for your problems. Good luck with your search.

I regularly use marijuana in conjunction with my psych meds to calm my hyper-sensitivity, irritability, lack of appetite, and insomnia. I use when depressed as well as manic. For me personally, smoking really helps with my depression, sort of makes all the crappiness more tolerable. When I'm on the manic end of the scale the weed helps keep me grounded and gives me an appetite so I can get food down. Definitely a good idea to go talk to dispensaries if they are available to you so you can get the right CBD/THC combo that works for you.
