I can't handle the sound of someone chewing something crunchy ie: lettuce, chips, etc..., slurping liquids, moaning while eating (gross), unnecessary loud yawning, tapping of fingers, phone ringing in my own house (actually startles me so bad my heart jumps & I feel faint), lawn mowers, leaf blowers, washing machine, dishwasher, dryer, even someone tinkling in the toilet so that I can hear it (yuck). They all make me insanely irritable & angry and I just want to lock myself in my room to get away from them. I just ruins my whole day. Any one else experience this. Yes, I know some of these noises are universally annoying but they should not send a person into an absolute rage or startle them so bad they feel threatened into a fight or flight reaction. Yes, thank you, I am on something for anxiety.

Yea. I get hypersensitive to noises sometimes. It's horrible. It happened when I was having issues with agitation last month. After I started taking risperdal for irritability/agitation the noise issues slowly subsided. Until then I had to find ways to deal with it. I understand the struggle!!! It sucks! I still get it some btw, but not as bad. Last month it was like a week of noise aggravation!

You should not have to apologise for requiring a proper sense of decorum in others - they are emphatically in the wrong, the lice.

I forgot. Sounds that set me off: silverware scraping bowls and plates, phones ringing a long time, snoring, coughing, loud or high pitch noises, people eating soup, loud eaters!, gum smacking, etc etc

I can relate this. Mine include the buzzer on the dryer, the bell on the microwave, football games on tv, screaming kids, barking dogs, plus all the other things that have been mentioned. I could probably think of more, but I'll stop here.

And I thought it was only me!

The tap tap tap of my husband playing solitaire on his computer when I'm trying to relax & read in the recliner-it sounds like it's right in my ear & drives me absolutely (almost) homicidal. Solitaire...really

Kids being loud when I'm in a restaurant trying to eat. Anyone being loud while I'm eating, really. I feel like they are intruding on me and it makes me very angry.

unny, I'm sitting here with my teeth on edge because my husband keeps coming in the front door and going back outside...slamming the door both ways. I'm trying really hard not to be snappy and ask WHY he has to SLAM the freakin' door every time he comes in or goes out. UGH. Doors can be closed quietly.

Great. Good to know I'm not the only one super sensitive to noise. Thought I might be crazy Got a good dose of lawn mower and leaf blower outside of my bedroom window today. Mom slamming doors and kitchen cabinets. I really think she could join STOMP! Sister is practicing her flute. My question is what makes us so super sensitive? Our illness, meds or both? It's as if the volume has been turned way up at times.

Medical equipment beeping and everyone ignoring it. Really, any repetitive beeping sound. I become enraged.

It's called misophonia, if it's to an extreme level. I can't stand the sound of pouring water, I literally can't tolerate it and can literally feel the rage build up. Same with cracks in soap - not a sound but still under the same category.

No sounds bother me; I honestly can think of none...unless I am furious (which only happens when manic so pretty infrequently), then the sound of someone breathing can send me over the edge. I once went to the basement and literally banged my head against the wall Because my kids were being too loud.

Today it was: 1) the TV was on, 2) I was trying to have a conversation with my husband and, 3) at the same time a child was talking to me. It was just too much noise!!! I burst out with a request to turn the TV off and have one conversation at a time. Too over stimulating.

I feel ya.

your talking about super hearing

like hearing the hum of electrical items ........u know those plug in pest scare away things ......or those things on the cars to scare deer away when u drive ....hear the train that is a good 5 miles away ....or the highway that is 3 miles ...drag strap that was 10 miles away

able to hear sirens several blocks/miles away before other ppl...or ticking of a watch from a few feet away

that is a side effect of the wiring in the head some of have it others do not it can be really madding when u are trying to sleep ......i thought u were talking about sounds that trigger responses in u can not control all that well

the answer to the super hearing is white noise .........i use a fan or air filter have it in the room running when u sleep u will get use to it after a few nights but it will help block those other sounds .......it will work for most things except diesel trucks warming up for 20 mins less then 20 feet from head and birds at the window
Thanks for this!

i can't stand those electric pet things!.

actually, 1 of my phobias is insects- bees, wasps, anything like that

and sometimes the phobia is so severe that i get those electric things mixed up with bees and wasps- and start feeling on the edge

it's the same with lawn mowers
Thanks for this!

Any noise that distracts me will eventually make me nuts. Once its in my head I'll become irritated until I have to make it stop.

My daughter whistles tunelessly all the time. Makes me wanna stuff a dishrag in her mouth. She also blows in her straw when she has a drink. Makes that whistle with the downward pitch. I have to leave the room.

I'm really surprised by how many are affected by this.

Do you think it is a mental health thing or something that the general public has issues with?

I know noise can really make me irritable, but I think of myself as overly sensitive to noise mainly due to my anxiety issues.
