Where's the line. If I think of suicide, say pulling the trigger, slashing, but follow those thoughts with the consequences of those actions for my family versus just thinking of ways to get the job done, where is the line? When does one become concerned?

Thinking about it is one thing, like when your depressed you just wish you were dead.

When in a mixed state with the energy to do, planning your suicide is not good. Now you have the energy to do.

So, I would say in the planning stages as you are about to do the deal. Don't do it! It's a trick.

For me, "thinking" is one thing.

Oh I can think heaps of things with my intrusive thoughts.

But the moment I want to DO - it is no longer a thought.

When the "thought" takes the next step into wanting to become an "ACTION".

IRL immediate assistance is required.

When thoughts become intent is the line.

Ok, I get how you all say when the thought goes from a "thought" to "a do" but sometimes I'll get really upset and have suicidal thoughts and then it turns into a visualization of the act and I'll start thinking of things I have that I could use. The past few months I've been very irritable and anything can set me off, I either end up being very angry and upset or feeling very low and depressed like and that's when the thoughts come. I don't actually want to die. And I do think of how it would affect my family if did do it, usually when I start to calm down. Is that considered a switch from "a thought" to "a do"? Just trying to understand.

When I was in the hospital the nurses and doctors asked me if I'm having suicidal thoughts, and if I said yes, they would ask "are they thoughts or are you planning?"

I don't necessarily think I was planning.

Through my Internship work (I am a psychology student) I have helped people discern the difference by understanding that suicidal idealization is a preoccupation, less invasive, as opposed to a suicidal impulse. Both are serious in nature and very, very difficult to walk around with. My heart goes out to you. I hope you found this helpful.

imo if this concerns you then there is an issue you would be better taking to a professional about....please be safe, take care of yourself....better to not wait till the thoughts become action...
