I've been thinking about this a little recently. I've recently been diagnosed having Bipolar type 2 as I have history of both observed depressive and hypomanic episodes.

One of the occasions I barely avoided being sectioned under the mental health act after a two week episode which resulted in me doing some really, really stupid things. I started fights, I didn't sleep a single minute in 4 days straight and finally I spent so much money on **** I didn't even want. I genuinely feel that at the time, I was losing grip on my reality.

It took 4 days on Zyprexa, Diazepam and God knows what else to bring me down from the clouds. Under threat of arrest, I had to attend my appointments every day for a week.

Is this typical hypomanic behaviour?

I currently have a BP2 Dx, but another pdoc said Bp1. I have similar experiences. I think there's really a fine line between Hypo and Full Blown. You had the big delusions and wild manic states of full blown it sounds like. Mine always end up with Law Enforcement or something intervening.

I take a practical approach. Not sure if 1 or 2 - just know I am bipolar and need to take me meds and keep myself in check, regardless of the exact type.

Hope this helps,

moogs

You're right. I know I suffer from bipolar. Take my meds and see how things go, crossing my fingers.

I have to increase my lithium again this week. Regardless of the type, that should at least sort out my more destructive upsides.

My understanding is hypo is feeling good while manic one gets delusional and exhibits every symptom you've expressed. Have you told your pdoc these things?

They're aware of it all. I was marched to the hospital with police officers and nearly involuntarily kept there and then.

Then there's another half a dozen occasions they don't know about...

On one hand, I'm glad that they took as long as they did to make sure I was diagnosed. Part of me wonders how things would be now had they diagnosed me years ago, though. All these years I've suffered, years I'll never get back.

Maybe they view it as "just a number for now" and are unwilling / not yet ready to change your dx from BP2 to BP1 ?

I don't know really.

I know some pdocs who err on the side of caution.

The main thing is that they are aware of your activities and thoughts during your episode.

And are working with you on meds to stabilise you.

Hang in there.

I understand hun. I was born bipolar and didn't get diagnosed till 45 years later, sigh. It's been a crazy life so far. But hey, got my meds and things are much better today
