Can anyone speak to the way bipolar and PTSD interact? I've had the PTSD diagnosis for a while but never really gave it much thought until today after telling my therapist about particular symptoms related to fear. She told me to monitor my symptoms, as something I previously thought may be related to mania could actually be the PTSD acting up. She also mentioned how both disorders could be at play simultaneously during an episode, kind of working off of each other. Was just curious if anyone else has experience with these two diagnoses. Thanks.

I have the delight of having both. The PTSD took some really good T's and some good trauma groups to learn coping methods like grounding, breathing and just plain having someone in my corner.
The BP took longer mostly because I was in denial. Right now I'm on a good cocktail with no side effects so I'm in a good place mood wise. In the past I blamed all my problems on PTSD but as I learned the coping skills it became obvious even to thick headed me that it wasn't all the PTSD. Looking back its pretty clear that the mania/depression cycles magnified the PTSD symptoms.

Yeah I have had both at the same time.
Unfortunately for me the stress of it caused the most severe manic psychotic episode ever. That is what happened. |
