Hi, It's been awhile since I've logged in here. I AM bipolar (or at least something similar to it the doctors say) and it is controlled for the most part with Lithium (1800 mg/day.) I work at a job and I work hard. At least 60 hours per week. Here's my issue: I've been doing such a good job at work that they want to promote me to Supervisor. I know that I'm going to have some trouble focusing on all the paperwork involved in the position. I want to do well but I'm afraid that if I screw this up I will end up without a job altogether. Another issue I may have is managing people without being mean if they disobey instructions. I always take stuff like that way too personally. Outside of the situation I can see that, but in the heat of the moment, I feel attacked and want to defend myself. So, in addition to finding a way to keep my mind focused, I need a way to deal with these feelings before I act out on them.

Are you on good enough terms with the higher ups that you can express these concerns and ask for a trial period of 30 or 90 days? That way both you and they can actually see if this promotion is a good fit for you.

At least 60 hours per week? Wow. Kudos to you for being able to pull that off successfully.

Do you currently see a therapist? They have helped me a lot with my emotions and reforming my thoughts to help me see how illogical I become sometimes. Just a thought. I do like what espurr said. It seems like a nice option if possible.

Also books on ADHD can help you with organization skills and how to tackle task. You may or may not have it but the techniques can still apply.

Have you considered not taking the promotion? I mean, if it's going to cause you anxiety and stuff. Just something to think about.

ok...

I'm reluctant to inform the "higher ups" as in the past this has turned out bad. Thanks for the kudos!

I am currently seeking a therapist. It's a little hard because I work so many hours and I really can't take time off work weekly. It's going to have to be a monthly thing. I'll see what they have for download on that ADHD book thing.

I have considered not taking the promotion but, I support my adult disabled sister so, the extra money isn't just nice to have, it's a bit of a necessity.

Thanks to all of you for your responses!

My therapist is helping me with paying attention by using mindfulness skills from DBT. Have you ever looked into DBT?
