Can anyone share their experience with Topamax? I am interested in trying this drug in place of lithium. Thanks

I use topomax to help with the weight gain from Psych Meds. So far I haven't lost weight, but I haven't gained anymore weight since I started it.

I wasn't aware they still used Topomax as a Mood Stabilizer. Please let us know how it goes.

Best of luck.

I started trying to get on it for migraine control in 2013. Because it is sedating and I was already on a lot of sedatives we didn't know if I manage to take it and get to a goal of 100 mg without being unable to get out of bed. I tried for months and while it immediately had some psych effect it was impossible to tolerate 50 mg. I tried cutting to 37.5 and got paranoid and agitated so was lowed back to 25 mg where I still am now. It seems unlikely that it does much at such a low dose but when I missed several doses when I ran out during a snowstorm my mood dipped so we continue it. Trying to increase again is one option for my current situation (on 1500 mg of Seroquel plus a bunch of others and not sedated) but because of the paranoia I think we decided not to do that. It never touched my migraines .

I lost weight on it but that's about it. No benefit to my moods.

I have tried it several times. It is an "attractive" choice for mood stabilization because it does not cause weight gain. However, it did not help me and I lost a ton of hair on it. I did lose about 10 lbs but my moods were all over the place. Everyone is differrent, so you never know for sure. I hope it is a smooth transition for you.
