I have seen many many posts here about how everybody hates seroquel. If anyone has followed my posts they would know that I have been on seroquel for over a year. Yes, there are side effects. It makes you drowsy, gives you dry mouth, racing heart etc etc. What are the long term effects? Who knows I'm sure there is an encyclopedia article on that. HOWEVER: Like I say I have been on 100mg morning, 100mg afternoon, and 200mg at night for 16 months. I thought that it changed my brain chemistry in two weeks. Then I felt good, and thought it changed my brain chemistry in 6 months. I felt better, and thought it changed my brain chemistry in a year. It did, and continues to do so. What happens is after taking it so long, and being steady and feeling good for so long I have actually begun to forget how bad I felt before. It's like a chemical altering the mind, then the mind altering the mind, because of the chemical. This medication is a miracle and has given me my life back. I am schizoaffective. You might find this that or the other thing unhealthy but let me politely remind you that if you don't have your sanity, you have absolutely nothing. From one crazy person to another, please listen to the professionals and stay on the prescribed pills. You won't regret it.

I'm not going to lie that yes Seroquel has been a great med for me. I really don't want to take diabetes medication the rest of my life or have triglycerides that I have been doing everything possible to control. With the assistance of my pdoc, I have been weaned off the 400 mg I was on over a three month span. I didn't just up and quit, I listened to my pdoc. I do believe in medications and am keeping in contact with my pdoc if something starts to go wrong and I also take other meds mind you. Who knows I may have to back on it? Oh and from crazy person to another, don't go around calling people crazy. Oh and maybe you should do some research on this med before you start boasting about it because you might end up in the same boat as me.

It's awesome that you found a medication that works so well for you, gemini. I'm not sure if you are actually trying to give yourself a pep talk here, or if you are feeling a bit manic and overflowing with the desire to spread the goodness to others, hehe. But please remember that medications affect different people differently. Congratz on finding and sticking with something that works for you, though, always nice to read/hear some good news once in a while.

I'm taking it.

But won't be for much longer.

Going to kiss seroquel goodbye.

In all seriousness though, it does work. It especially helps with my anxiety issues. Like when I actually stay on it consistently for a two week span I don't even feel like I need to take my clonazepam as much (say, I'll only need 1mg a day, instead of 3mg or something). And it works as a great mood stabilizer too, in my opinion. When I went off of it completely my mood completely tanked and I became suicidally depressed, and now that I'm back on it I don't feel that way anymore.

The only, lingering side effect I have from it is that it makes it hard for me to get up in the morning (though once I'm up, I'm okay), and it's making me gain weight (I think. I don't know. Our scale needs new batteries, and I've been too lazy to change them). And it gives me the munchies hardcore.

It's like I have a love/hate relationship with it. I hate it because it's making me fat and starving all of the time, but I love it because it helps a lot with my anxiety, works great at stabilizing my mood, and makes me feel more confident.

Sigh. Stupid seroquel.

Good that it works for you but it wasn't working for me. I took Seroquel for about 6 or 7 years. My weight gain wasn't that bad, only 80 lbs over all (pushing me around 260 lbs). It didn't help me sleep after awhile, because I develop resistance to that kind of thing and it wasn't working for me anymore.

Any benefits I had in the first place were gone. I started changing medications and I started feeling better. I'm having issues right now but I'm not going back on the Seroquel. The dose I was at kept me functional but I hated my body and self image and didn't realize until I went off how sublimial the eating was. It wasn't that I felt hungry or relly acknowleged I wanted sweets but when I went to the grocery store or phramacy or gas station I got candy or cookies. And if it was buy 2 get 1 free I'd do that. Then eat them all in one sitting.

And by functional I mean, I went to work, went to the grocery store or errands, came home and spent my evenings and weekends emotionally recuperating from the stress of work and doing errands.

So I was able to work but not have a social life.

It works for you and that's fantastic but it doesn't work for everyone.

Some people have great experineces with Effexor and that landed me in the hospital.

Seroquel is a fine med and helps probably hundreds of thousands of bipolar people. It's just not for me.

In general, the vast majority of med related posts are negative.

I am glad you found a good med for you!

Seroquel was my pdoc's first choice for me. I could not take it. Serious side effects.

I love my seroquel

It does make me crave chocolate so I need to be sensible.

Take. The. Seroquel.

I use it only for sleep... It does gives the munchies though. Wife gets aggravated I leave dirty dishes by my bedside lol.. Slight weight gain but in all honesty I wanted to gain about ten pounds and I've stayed there after the initial med change...

Different strokes for different folks

I had some serious weight gain on it and I've always been EXTREMELY sensitive about my body image. I'm glad others have said something so similar in this thread. I feel kind of lame having this be my number one issue with the drug when numerous BP meds can cause weight gain. It really is a big deal to me, though. It can be very triggering, especially when I'm depressed. If the weight gain continued—and I wish I had the confidence to say I'd NEVER do this, but it is a risk—I'd become very tempted to stop taking it on my own. I'm working on my negative body image and food issues in therapy, because it needs to be dealt with, but in the meantime, it's safer for me to be on a weight neutral medication. So far I've been managed well with Tegretol.

Despite all the negative I can say about it, it DID pull me out of acute mania, so I do see the merit to it, but not for me longterm. I'm very glad it's worked well for you, however! I hope your success continues.
