Hello!
I was wondering if you all had any coping mechanisms you use when you're depressed/manic. I haven't gotten around to learning any yet and could use some pointers.

Hi Alene, If I were doing research on coping mechanisms for the first time, I would be searching through the many posts here on PC. There is so much information on here in regards to coping mechanisms.Having said that, there are some really staple ones I TRY to remember.

Take your medication religiously.
Don't mess with your medications when your feeling good.
Get enough sleep, and sleep when you should and wake when you should.
Learn to recognize your triggers, and how best to avoid and or handle them.
Learn as much as you can about self calming techniques, meditation, relaxation distractions etc
Get a good support network around you, including T and Pdoc, and be honest with them.
Avoid stressful situations
Learn to live within your capabilities.
Learn to say no.
Learn how to 'shut down' from life when you need to.
Don't beat yourself up over the way your feeling. Accept it, change what you can, and then be ok with what you can't change -with your life, with you, or with what your going through.

And there are plenty more, but my brain has gone on strike and I can't think. The above are some of the ones I try to remember. Try.

xXx
Thanks for this!

There are heaps to try. Im not going to go through a shitton of them because it is never appreciated.

One thing I would recommend is mood tracking. That can also help you identify triggers

Many great ones already listed This place is full of outstanding people, advice and support

When I stumbled on to PC I was teary, clueless and a hot mess.

The first person to reach out to me said " Mindfulness" do that and then we will work on other coping skills together. I did and well the rest is history. Her and I have been "Sisters" since.
