Is it common for people with bipolar disorder to experience hallucinations? I see things on occasion but I hear things more frequently. Last night I heard an angry voice telling me to do something, but I don't remember what it was that she asked me. I've never experienced that before, usually it's a voice saying my name or mumbling.

I only experience hallucinations during full blown mania. Many bipolar sufferers experience then more regularly. Is it just an occasional bother or something more serious?

It happens to me a lot especially when i don't eat enough with my geodon. I was eating about 300 calories a day for a few months and and I was hallucinating every day pretty much. My pdoc thinks I have schizoaffective because of it. I don't think i do.

I hear "Thumping music" that nobody else can hear. The THUMPING makes me crazy feeling.
I see shadow figures racing past, out of the corner of my eyes. Mostly, I suffer delusions, rather than hallucinations. I'm sorry you're having this troubling symptoms. |

I see shadows too. Sometimes, I hear my name called when no one does. I think it's probably related more to my paranoia than anything else but who knows?

I don't hear things too often, but I was concerned about this one because it was a complete sentence not just my name and it was telling me to do something.

I see a demon at times watching me. Her name is Dolly and I mostly just hear her in my head, but there are times I see her. I also see animals run by, and sometimes see people that are not there. They usually disappear quickly, but they aren't out of the corner of my eye type of hallucinations. I do get those as well though, and I hate those the most because they scare me much more than the others. I also see shapes when I am listening to music.

I stay up for hours at night because I can hear people talking through my air vents... plotting... I can't understand what they are saying but they are there and I get scared people are breaking in and going to harm me or my girlfriend. Sometimes it sounds like someone is watching tv with old timey voices cracking jokes... it's very unsettling, me nd my girlfriend live alone, she doesnt hear a thing... sometimes I hear a radio playing generic songs coming from the air, I can't pinpoint it...

Gee, it seems a lot of us do. I get visual out of the corner of my eye late at night, a real person not out of the corner of my eye (I have named him). He talks to me so I can pretty much understand most of it, bad things, and then sometimes I get a sort of a crowd mumbling, very distracting. It seems to be related to my sleep patterns, but not always. If it gets real bad I up my Zypexa for a bit. Hope you get yours sorted out soon, I have had mine for a long time.

Does this happen to you all only during an extreme episode or is it in between too? For me it's in between too.

Hmmmm yes when I've been severely manic I've heard people yelling at me. Angry ones. Usually. Not nice.

I see hallucinations and hear voices between episodes, but they aren't as bad as when I am in a full blown mania or depression.

I had them. It's not common. Just got to remind yourself that they are not real and focus on the good things in life

During manic episodes, I hear music and I hear my name being called alot.
Unfortunately, I usually scream back. I don't have any visual hallucinations, but prior to getting into full-blown mania, I think colors seem more intense. |

Hi RisuNeko, tell me, were you prone to hallucinations before you started geodon? I'm about to start and need a little advice.

I hear my name being called in crowded places and I see animals running on the sides of the road if I drive while it's getting dark. These things have gotten better, though, since I have been shaping my life to where I don't have to leave my house very often except to go to a few very specific places.

Sometimes i have auditory hallucinations people talking or unnoticeable music of some sort. I don't think i have ever had visual hallucinations though there are questionable times where i might have been. Mostly for me though is paranoia.

Yeah I had hallucinations before the geodon. All kinds. Visual auditory tactile olfacory. More frequently during episodes but between episodes too if I don't eat enough with my geodon. I wad eating like 300 calories a day for a couple months and I was hallucinating like every day but now that im eating more I haven't been having hallucinations.

I do. Right now a lot (and I'm not in an episode).
luctor - So far with geodon my mood has really lifted (wasn't depressed before, but now I feel very pleasant), and I think it's starting to help a little with my paranoia, but I've only been on it a few days. My anxiety is definitely less. I haven't had any side effects yet.

I've had all four types of hallucinations listed above (visual, auditory, tactile & olfactory) but not very often.

Geodon is a supposedly weight neutral antipsychotic. I've tried every antipsychotic short of clozaril and this is the only one that has worked reasonably well. It's not weight neutral for me though. I've been able to lose about 50 lbs on it but only by starving myself. If I ate even 1200 calories a day I would gain weight like crazy. When I eat enough though it knocks out the hallucinations. Not that I even wanted them knocked out. They didn't bother me.

I have heard all kinds of music, voices that sound like radio announcers, my name being called. I also smell nasty things like dirty diapers, garbage, kitty litter and banana peels. Most have happened during manic or mixed state episodes. The smells come first and the sounds usually start off far away but get clearer and louder the more worked up I am.
