I'm trying to get off Seroquel and have decided to try trileptal. Has anyone else been on this med? Does it work for mania? I've been on Seroquel for over 10 years and am sick of the weight issues!

I'm on Trileptal at 1800mg I take at night. I've been on it for just about 6 years without issues. But I do struggle with depression issues from time to time. No weight issues from it, I think the antidepressants have caused the weight gain.

I take 1200mg a day divided in three doses. I think I don't crash as hard since I've been on it except for this mixed episode last week that zyprexa cleared up.

I love it. Adding it was a game changer for me. Not sure about it as far a mania goes, since I only get hypomania (and not very often).

I've taken trileptal for two years now. It definitely works for me although the first 6-8 months were an adjustment. I was very drowsy in the mornings, gained some weight, had trouble with coordination, and some muscle spasms (tardive dyskinesia?). However, I'm doing much better now. My weight is under control and I no longer get unmanageably drowsy -- at least nothing a good cup of coffee can't cure. The muscle spasms come and go, being most prominent when I'm stressed. Not a big deal but I didn't have them before I started trileptal.
Good luck! |

I was on Trileptal and I had weight gain, bloating, major sleepiness, wobbly walking-typical side effects, but what made me change was the gas/bloating–I cannot live with that!!! I think it's supposed to help with mania, but by the time I had started it I had already majorly crashed from a long hypomania phase, but it was helping with my panic attacks. I take Lamictal now and it has been great. I've been taking it for 15 months, and it does help with hypomnia. Many people take Lamictal over many other meds and love it. Could you try this? I had side effects to work through but I like it way more than Trileptal. Best.

I've been on a low dose for about a month and it has turned my life around! I feel better and more normal than I have in years. I've had no side effects from it so far.

Trileptal is a great medication, it has really turned my life around. However there are heavy side effects at first, but they pass in a few weeks. Many people just don't give it enough time.

This happened to me as well. Hang in there -- the side effects do wear off. A cup of coffee in the morning helps. Try to stay active if you can -- doing yoga, swimming, solving puzzles, etc. were all some low stress activities that helped me feel that my mind was salvageable.

Trileptal is related tegretol which made me a complete blumbering idiot but trileptal doesn't have any cognitive side effects for me.
