I have been on Risperdal for two years and have been very lazy and unmotivated. I'm just wondering if the Risperdal is doing this to me or it's just my depression or both. Has anyone had lack of motivation/energy on an antipsychotic?

I have plenty of energy, I'm on Invega Sustenna which is the active metabolite of Risperdal

I recommend that you talk to your doctor about it, ASAP!

Antipsychotics can definitely affect energy. Some are worse than others. When I was on zyprexa, I had to take caffeine pills to get out of bed! And saphris just knocked me right out after I took it...

I'm not sure if they can affect motivation so much, though. That could be from your depression, or a negative symptom of your schizoaffective disorder.

I'm on Seroquel and Risperdal and i only have problems with motivation when i am depressed -- which is most of the year. In the Spring i have tremendous motivation and boundless energy even tho i am on the same meds. So for me, motivation is more related to my mood than my meds.

Risperdal makes me gain weight. It keeps me thinking of food all the time. Going to ask my doctor to change it for something else asap.

I think it depends on the AP. Seroquel eventually turned me into a lazy person. It didn't affect my motivation though. I'm happy I'm off it and on geodon now.

I'm on a moderate dose of both Latuda and Seroquel and I still have energy most days. Sometimes I have to take a nap mid day but maybe only once a week. I get up at 6 and take my dog on a bike ride with our longest one being 15 miles. So for me, APs only get rid of the voices but don't zap my energy. They give me calm energy while without them I would be manic.

I am prescribed risperdal. I recently stopped taking it as prescribed because it makes me drag during the day. It makes me feel like I can't drum up a thought. We will see how long it will last. For now, I can think and act. Good luck on finding what's best for you. I have not found it yet. . .

Sounds like your probably just snowed under too much.. You might need a dose change or a new medication all together..

" Ideally" the correct med and dosage will allow you to manage your life easier and have less Bipolar difficulties, hense why it's so hard for people to find the right combination that helps and doesn't snow you under too far. Fine line... it is .

I'm on two APs and I have noticed a change in my energy levels over the past year and a half. I'm not depressed at all, and I'm definitely much calmer than I used to be, which is great. But I don't have much motivation to initiate activities, even though I'm always thinking of things I want to do (or should want to do, anyway). I have cut back on one of the APs and expect to cut back further in two months when I see my pdoc, so we'll see if that helps matters some. I'm too young to sit around waiting to die.
