Before I became disabled and had to quit working due to BP, I had a life insurance policy through my company for about $800,000. Now that I am not working, I have no life insurance. From what I have read, it is next to impossible to get life insurance. I have had 4 hospitalizations, a suicide attempt at age 16 (now I am 47), and ECT this year. I am on social security disability. Anyone out there been successful getting a policy?

I plan to see a broker/agent but thought I would check here first.

Thanks in advance.

That is a great question. I would like to know also
You can always get term insurance, but it is not the same thing
Anyone know the answer?

I am not bipolar but thought my experience might be relevant--

I tried to get a small whole life insurance policy (basically a death benefit) through a phone service that my husband used to get his term policy. Basically they work with several companies and try to match you with the best policy.

The lady on the phone asked me a vague question about "mental" and "brain" conditions. I said, does depression count as one of those? And she said, have you been hospitalized for it in the past three years? I said yes, as I had been. She said, sorry, then you don't qualify.

Ten minutes later she called me back and said she was mistaken. Depression was okay, it was "only mental illnesses, like bipolar," that counted. I was able to get the policy.

The whole thing was pretty confusing. I'm not sure the lady on the phone had any idea what she was talking about.

But I thought I would mention it because the date of your last hospitalization seemed to be relevant, at least for this policy.

I have always wondered if they would pay off (if they found out about your mi after you died) even if your policy was older than your dx.. kind of an excape clause for them.... would love to hear from an agent or anyone well versed in this....

I find this topic interesting as well. I have a small policy that I got prior to my dx (diagnosed very late in life) and it was a 'no questions' policy. I wonder the ramifications of non-disclosure et al as well

I was diagnosed with Bipolar two years ago and was able to get a non-term life insurance policy with State Farm. During the Q&A- I simply confirmed the diagnosis and when it was effective. My age was 32 at the time I sought the life insurance policy.

I was denied for life insurance by a bunch of companies - not because of the bipolar but because I was on SSDI for it. I was able to get a $100,000 accidental death policy. Now that I am working again and will be going of SSDI I will apply again - but of course, I have gained 40 lbs so who knows what they will say about that!
Thanks for this!

I just received a call about a life insurance inquiry I placed. I'm in a similar situation mom.

I'm 57 and on social security disability for bipolar 1. I had life insurance at one time but no longer do.

The quote I received was for about $90 a month for $25k of life insurance. It is through Gerber and it sounds like that's about the best I can do based on that call plus other searches and quotes.

Going to continue to look around but don't think there's much more out there.

I've always wanted to know this! And the younger you are the easier it is to get a policy in certain circumstances. I need to get on the ball about this...

It's not the same as private term insurance, but social security disability does provide death benefits to spouses, and dependents of persons receiving disability. This is such a morbid topic for me. My husband really had to push me to think about end of life concerns. I think it's great that you're taking this on.
