I've heard so much about the weight gain side effects of a lot of BP meds. I'm wondering HOW though. Is it because it increases your appetite and you eat more? I read somewhere that depakote just makes you gain weather you eat or not. But how is that possible? Water weight I suppose. I've heard of seroquel giving ppl the "munchies" but it's never done that for me.

Some meds slow your metabolism down and/or numb your stomach nerve endings that make you feel full, increasing your appetite.

My pdoc explained it to me as being the same , this is my paraphrase, chemical whatever in the brain that the med is controlling to affect your moods properly also affects the chemical or whenever that controls your appetite so that when you are full your brain isn't telling you that you have had enough to eat the message doesn't get there and you still want to eat. I have found that I crave sugars on those types of meds.

I'm also bulimic so I already have cravings to the point where I can't think straight. A donut to me is like a naked woman to a man lol. But my dr just put me on vyvance. It's a stimulant so I have to be careful but it has helped with my cravings/appetite tremendously. Only bad thing is, I've already gotten used to the dose so it's not effective anymore unless I double up.

I gained thirty plus lbs on lithium. Then I started taking risperdal which didn't make the situation better. I can not answer ur question but I can attest that yes weight gain and psy meds is real. I have a younger sister that was on depakote. She looked like a grown amazon woman within a few months. She quit taking meds after a few more months and started working out. Now she's back to her slim figure.

I gained 40 lbs on Lithium but lost it all when I went off it when I was healthier mood-wise. It was a trip because I'm anorectic but I was seriously losing the plot. It helped pull me out of a psychotic mixed episode.
I've taken many AD's and AP's and Lithium was the only weight gainer for me. My pdoc refuses to rx Zyprexa to ANY of his patients due to weight gain. |

PS: Vyvanse will obliterate your appetite. You won't be able to eat so it may balance out the cravings.
