Hello. Today I learned one of my friends were diagnosed with bipolar 1 a long time ago after a psychotic episode. But I always thought it was just depression or PTSD (no PTSD, half right with depression) because she said she was on antidepressants and I thought you can't be on antidepressants with bipolar. Is that true? Am I mistaken? Please let me know about your experiences. Thanks.

I've seen a lot of people on here that are on anti-depressants. My pdoc told me if need be he would, but a low dose because I go manic. I swing on the high side, and go through small depressions from time to time. I think it's based on the patient and a pdocs view.

Yes lots of people with Bipolar are on antidepressants but it's usually in combination with a mood stabilizer and/or antipsychotic

I can't be on an anti-depressant alone or I will go from depressed to manic to mixed within 2-3 weeks. However so far I am able to be on Zyprexa and Prozac at the same time without that happening.

I didn't do well with celexa or Prozac but I'm fine on Wellbutrin. But I absolutely have to be on an antipsychotic with it, or I'll be up in space. Everyone is different.

So it's possible, but it has to be in combination with other mood stabilizers and antipsychotics, right?

It is possible and most people are on a mood stabilizer too.

Me personally I can't take AD with or w/o mood stabilizers but that's me. Every single person with any MI reacts differently to psych meds, so it's something like trial and error to find what works for you. Pdocs though have experience with different people and can usually figure out where to start once they know your diagnose and past experiences with meds.

Good luck.

Yes. I was first mis-dx with depression and put on just Celexa. I went pure manic. Once they figure out I was mood swinging and other symptoms they knew I was BP1. They took me off Celexa. I was put on a mood stabilizer, an antipsychotic and then an antidepressant. I've been fine since. My body just needs the mood stabilizer and the antipsychotic your frnd might only need one or the other.

I think everyone is different. I am bipolar II and take an antidepressant but I also take a mood stabilizer. My depressive states get too bad if I don't take a antidepressant.

Apparently, I will go manic if an anti depressant comes within 10 feet of me.

I think some might be more sensitive to them compared to others. Everyone reacts differently. But I think the dose may also play a role. When my effexor was increased earlier this year, it threw me into a hypo manic episode.
Thanks for this!

Everyone is differeont this is true. When I go into a depression my doc had suggested an antidepressant but I refused. I wanted to handle it naturally with my antipsychotic. I know meds help, but I would rather be on as less meds as possible,

Anyway to answer your question, yes people with bipolar can be given antidepressants.

I take prozac every day and I have bipolar I. HOWEVER, I also take a mood stabilizer every day too - and I think that is they key to managing an antidepressant when you have bipolar.

I personally can't, even with a mood stabilizer. Others can though.
