I sometimes have mild auditory hallucinations—hearing music playing, hearing people talking, etc. But one thing I've been noticing a lot lately is that I perceive sounds to be coming from a different direction than they actually are. Someone will walk in front of me and I'll hear their footsteps behind me thinking someone else is there; my dog is sitting next to me but I hear him licking his lips across from me; someone calls to me and it sounds like their voice is coming from behind (once I didn't recognize my moms voice because I thought it was someone else yelling). It's very strange and becoming more frequent, although I feel pretty stable right now.

Does this happen to anyone else? Is there a word for it?

I'm glad you posted this! I've been having the sensation odd misplaced sounds recently too. I've never categorized them as hallucinations though and I don't have a word for it. Even though I do experience music, voices, and a radio as examples of hallucinations it takes me a long time to realize what they are. With the sounds I need a few seconds too realize that my kids are in front of me but it sounds like they're beside me and a distance away.
I also have noticed that things can be distorted. If someone says something it can sound like a growl from a monster or other weird this. These aren't things I've ever had a doctor bring up and I haven't read about it before but it's happens 10-15 times a day and comes on bursts through the year.
I did have the theory that because they are real and true sounds being misheard it may stem from my irritating fall allergies.
Thanks for this!

I'm glad YOU posted this! I wasn't sure if it's psychological or physical, something wrong in my ears. I doubted it when it first started happening but I knew it was real the day my mom yelled at me. Her voice sounded like a woman with an Indian accent and she seemed angry. She wasn't angry though, she yelled because we were outside and a big storm was about to hit. Weirdly, a few minutes before that we passed an Indian lady and for a second I thought she was going to yell at us for using the high school track, but she never spoke. So something mental must be going on? I don't know if it's related to hallucinations or something totally different.

I also get olfactory hallucinations and I went outside and smelled dog poop by my next door neighbor's backyard. They don't have dogs, no one ever walks their dogs back there, and there was no poop anywhere. My yard has a lot of poop that needs to be cleaned up but I didn't smell it when I came back in. The smell thing could just be me being paranoid but I'm going to keep an eye on it.

I saw my pdoc a couple days ago and I totally forgot to bring it up. It happens, disturbs me for a minute, then I forget about it.

This is widely known as phantom cries and all mothers I know have experienced this at some time. I love the idea of it being a cultural occurrence.

Mention it next time you go and report back. What you said seems like it stems from suggestion, which is interesting. I googled a minute ago and found that a condition exists that cause people to lose the ability to determine the origin of sounds, but I only skimmed the page.

In addition to that, when I have been unwell in the past (whether hypo, manic, or mixed I couldn't say because it was last year before I received my dx and started paying attention) I had a period of time when I smelled b.o. on me all the time and I thought people were avoiding me. No amount of cleansing or deodorant made a difference. Actually to sit and think on it like this I have smelled a lot of things that were odd at the time.
Thanks for this!

Music, I hear a radio playing, but it is not quite properly tuned into the station. I can't make out where is it coming from other than somewhere in the far away
It sounds so real, but nobody else can hear it

I hear music a lot too, and DJ's talking to each other. I usually can't make out what they're saying but I can tell if they are male or female and enthusiastic or arguing. It usually seems like it's coming from a certain point in the air near me even though it sounds far away.

Yep. I have this as well. Sounds become amplified and non-directional. I also sometimes hear someone calling me.

I experience this too, sound displacement or whatever the hell it is.

I thought it might be from the time I almost busted my ear drum, but reading this thread I'm not sure.

The only hallucinations I have are sensory ones. Like being on acid or mild psychedelics but I am straight.
