this is a great article that I hope will be seen by many people. unfortunately the media only show mental illness at its worst, rather than as all of the lovely people on PC. It is used to explain the unexplainable..like "oh that person killed a bunch of people, he must be bipolar". At least that is how it appears to me. It sucks because I view it as a medical ailment that can be treated and is not a label. Someone can have cancer, yet they are not cancer. I can have bipolar disorder and I am labeled as being bipolar, but I am not that disorder. Hopefully one day the world can eat a cake full of rainbows and smiles and accept people for who they are, disorders and all.

I wish people were more informed too. I shouldn't have to feel afraid of telling people I'm bipolar. Way too many people I know would judge me or suddenly think of me differently. Last month while hypomanic I briefly mentioned being bipolar to a guy I didn't know very well for some reason, and from then on he basically acted as though he was entitled to know everything about my medication and treatment because it could affect him. Nothing more annoying than someone claiming they've "experienced your mania first hand" because you happened to hit the enter button a little earlier than usual after each sentence you typed to him on skype, and therefore ruined a song he was listening to with skype notifications.

Thanks for sharing-- this is an awesome article. I've long been frustrated by the media's depiction of mental illness in general, and in bipolar in particular. For those who don't have time or inclination to read the whole article, here's a most salient quote: "Research also suggests most media portrayals of mental illness are stereotypical, negative or flat-out wrong – meaning many people gain an unfavorable or inaccurate view of those with psychological disorders simply by skimming a few sentences or picking up a remote control."
