I'm posting this here because I'm not getting a response in the meds forum.

So, I started Strattera for ADD and am on Prozac and Geoden for skin picking. I've never thought of myself as having bi-polar 2, just ADD but the symptoms are similar.
Now since I started the new meds I am having mania; sleeping only 5 hours a night and feel rested, racing thoughts, ideas, agitation and restlessness. Anyone else experience this while on their meds and how did you finally treat it..were you then diagnosed bi-polar?

Thanks

I experienced hypomania from my meds when I was misdiagnosed MDD and prescribed SNRI anti-depressants, which pulled me out of depression and sent me into hypomania. What you're describing does kind of sound like hypomania, but it may be something else, and it could be caused by something other than your meds. Have you consulted your pdoc about it?

I was on ritalin for ADHD and fluoxetine for depression and this triggered hypomania in me too. Now I'm on mood stabilizers for bipolar. Definitely ask a pdoc. It never hurts to get another opinion, especially because bipolar II in particular seems like it is very commonly misdiagnosed at first.

Do you suffer from a long history of depressive episodes as well? Of course if you are young you won't have that much history yet lol

I do have a few depressive episodes..especially in High School and I had mania then as well but I always just thought it was my ADD. Since I drank pretty much non-stop for awhile after that I would get manic with alcohol then get depressed from the alcohol so it was hard to tell what really was going on with me now. Now that I'm sober I just thought it was add but reacting manically to the treatments I'm on...its making me wonder if I have some bi-polar..just mostly manic episodes more than depression though..

I remember when I took some Ritalin - it was nothing like regular hypomania - it was almost like Ecstasy. Now that I think about that it was very manic.

Anti-depressants make me hypomanic so I need to take a mood stabiliser with them to balance me out. Without AD's I get very depressed. Lithium oddly also makes me hypomanic when I first start it then things settle down.

I was on Ritalin for years before my last Pdoc took me off it and said I didn't have ADHD, I had BPII....the ADD meds were basically making me constantly manic and after I found I could abuse them I was full blown manic when doing so....verses just hypomanic, which is more normal state.

Just saying, can totally happen.

I'm bp2 and take vynance for binge eating. It's put me in full blown mania and I have abused them to stay up or be alert for work ect. I'm against stimulants and BP yet I'm still prescribed them. I try my hardest to just use them PRN

Hope you get some answers. I developed hypomania while taking a SNRI. I was previously thought to have MDD. But now the doc thinks it's Bipolar 2

I had the same reaction when I started taking Cipralex. It was hard to deal with especially during the first 2 weeks. After that it gradually disappeared. My psychiatrist gave me an emergency script for Ativan which helped with the agitation and restlessness.

I'm sensitive to medication especially antidepressants. Prozac gave me full blown mania that resulted in a hospital stay. I gradually went back to normal after the medication was stopped. I also had a reaction to Paxil which wasn't as severe. It made me very irritable and constantly suicidal. The psychiatrist decided to try divalproex sodium which actually helped.

I don't have bipolar disorder. I've never had a spontaneous mania, one that wasn't drug induced. I'm not exactly sure what my diagnosis is. I've had a few episodes of psychotic depression and a psychosis ("schizophrenia spectrum").

Yeah,
Thank you for the responses. I was diagnosed Bi-polar 2 the other day after a long history and show of manic reaction to my meds..even add meds! So, now I'm on lithium twice a day to start. I actually feel much more even keel already, I can't believe it! The nausea and diarrhea sucks though.
