I normally don't have such chronic sleep problems during hypomania. I just stayed up for 2 days and last night I still couldn't sleep more than like 4 hours and even then I woke up constantly! Sure, I typically stay up quite a long time when hypomanic but when I do sleep, I end up getting pretty good sleep. Unlike this. I've never had a manic episode, only hypomanic...but could this be pointing towards something more severe than hypomania? I might just be paranoid but again, never been full-blown manic so I don't know the warning signs. Tonight I'm definitely going to take klonopin because I don't see myself sleeping, again.

Sleep is key. That's when things start getting dangerous, at least for me. Lack of sleep fuels the bipolar mind in a terrible way. That's when reasoning and insight disappear. Warning signs of something more than hypomania?... Talk to your pdoc as we are all different! The klonapin is a good idea. Get that rest even if your mind says you don't need it! Good luck!

I have to have sleep. I wrote about my 4 days of non-sleep last week and it was making everything worse! I now know it can be a trigger for a manic episode but mine was self induced by the pdoc since she wanted me off all the Benadryl. I had to go back to it this weekend. It was worse for me not to sleep than to take it. If it's not something you have personally changed, then definitely keep an eye on it.

I agree. Make sure you get some sleep. And call your pdoc.

Hi,

Do you have any other symptoms? Flight of ideas? Urges to spend money? Heightened Sexual Energy? Pressure speech?

Those are my manic signs. Often in mania, I would not have enough presence to sit down and write out a forum post, so yeah - at least you still have that.

I remember that post of yours. I read it and it came to mind recently when I realized I just wasn't sleeping. I fear that this will continue on for days if not longer. Only change that happened was my lithium being increased to 900mg from 300mg, since a week ago.

Flight of ideas definitely, but directed towards safe energy outlets like my art projects/learning languages. I do have pressured speech every now and then, but not consistently throughout the day. No urges to spend money because my boyfriend manages my money for that very reason lol. And yes, to the hypersexuality, but I'm not in a situation where that could get dangerous. I know I'm not full-blown manic but I didn't know if me sleeping this little consistently was a sign that I may become so, further down the road. I sure hope not because I wouldn't know what to expect.

My pdoc has a rule that (I don't remember it now even though I need to call for just this reason) I think 3 days of no sleep or 5 days with minimal sleep and I am to call immediately for med changes to prevent going out of control (which for me is usually going to be a bad mixed episode more than typical mania). But in general the rule should be if you're not sleeping call sooner rather than later b/c you're potentially going to feel less like calling as time passes and that can cause problems.
