Do I need a referral to get an appointment with a psychiatrist? The one I used to see is awful so I'm looking for someone new. I have an appointment with my family doctor on Monday for a physical for my job so I can ask then any way but I was just curious. Thanks for your help!

It depends if your insurance requires a referral to see a specialist. This is typical with HMO policies. The specialist will not get paid by the insurance without a referral in place in that case.

Otherwise you are completely free to schedule with whomever. Maybe just call your insurance and ask. But if you are going to be seeing your doctor anyway, wouldn't hurt to ask for a referral either way.

It depends. I didn't have to for my pdoc, but I always have to for medical specialists. Usually an insurance plan will have a list of pdocs they work with and you can go straight in. I would just double check with your ins provider.

If your insurance is a PPO, then you can do as you please...but a HMO requires a referral.

A lot of times, at visiting a new doctor, they will fax your doctor for a referral, just make sure that they take your insurance.

I wanted to see a pdoc for the longest time when going to my MD. He prescribed psych meds and kept postponing referral. I think he was just greedy and didn't want to cut me lose.
Then I found a pdoc on my own which accepted my ins.
Later when the head pdoc retired and sold building, I went without for awhile. Don't remember all the details, but I now see my pdoc from hospital. She has an office. I'm thinking of changing again when I go back to the states.
The pdoc I have now is in favor of continuing ECT ( Brain Fry) and I'm never doing it again unless it's an emergency. I need someone who will keep me on present meds as they seem to be keeping me stable. ( except I need to figure out the headaches??

It wouldn't hurt to ask Monday.

I wanted my regular doc to treat me but he refused. He said I was "too difficult" of a case for him, so he made a referral. I had already chosen a pdoc and had the info with me.

Hmm. I have Medicaid and a HDHP through my work. I don't think that's an HMO. I may just call tomorrow and ask because Monday feels like it's a really long ways away. And what's the worst that could happen?
