I have two psychiatrists (one is my CBT program therapist). They seem to be at odds over my medication. My lead psychiatrist has - after 5yrs - tweeked my medication to the point I am now relatively stable. As part of my Cognative Behaviour Therapy, my therapeutic psychiatrist has prescribed me Citalopram. The idea is that it help me with my Anxiety and, in particular, my obsessive behavior and tendancy to ruminate.
But, as the first pdoc has explained to me, there is the chance the SSRI could throw the balance out of whack - in particular cause a manic episode. This is a frightening idea. |

It is frightening! However, are you going to be monitored closely during the changeover? I mean if you decide to do it, you go up on a dose of Citalopram, very slowly, and see what happens. If you have a good relationship with the doctor, they'll help you if you slip, or feel manic.

In my experience with citalopram it has not helped my anxiety issues.

Aren't there better meds for anxiety than an SSRI? If you are having anxiety issues then can't your lead psychiatrist tweak your medications a bit more?
I don't envy you having 2 competing treatment plans.

There are other solutions then an SSRI for anxiety but that's an entirely different world once you get to being prescribed benzos. And they don't cure the underlying issue. I'm sure anxiety is better than benzo withdrawal.
