I have been missing quite of bit of work lately due to the bipolar/depression/panic attacks. My boss had me sign a write up and wanted an explanation and I was honest with her. I even applied for medical leave which I got short term, but my boss has been angry with me ever since and has made my life miserable. I thought being honest about my situation would help, but it seems to have made it worse?

I'm sorry to say, but I think there's a lot of discrimination against people with mental illness.
Did you want to keep this job? Or are you going to go for SSDI ?

If you go for SSDI I'd suggest getting a lawyer. Every person in my support group didn't get approved till they got help from a lawyer.

I'm not on it. My Pdoc has a sign on her wall that she will not fill out paperwork. Nice huh?

It's not a coincidence that a boss goes from apparently supportive to angry and vindictive. It happened to me too. I'm on leave now and looking for something else. I've learned my lesson though. I'm not gonna disclose unless the workplace is disability friendly and everyone is disclosing hidden disabilities. I'm with you about honesty is best, but I think in reality, that attitude left me unprotected. Live and learn I guess.
Thanks for this!

That's how I lost my job. I went on short term disability and when I came back there was no jo for me to come back to. Since I was working over a year I deserved severance pay they wanted to not pay. Luckily I caught my boss saying I was fired (those words specifically) and got the labor board involved and suddenly I got my severance.

Thanks for the advice. It's so sad that employers discriminate against those with mental illness, even when you are good at your job. I think I may have to look into SSDI, I've been thinking about it for awhile now.

Well congrats on SSDI success. Maybe the office in California is lazy. I've heard of them claiming they never got records ect.
Just from my support group and others I know. No personal experience. I'm not on SSDI.

Bipolar has cost me more than one job. Even medical people can be extremely judgmental and discriminatory. The Americans with Disabiities Act is surprisingly ineffective at stopping discrimination due to mental illness. I was let go from one job because I took three weeks medical leave of absence and my pdoc requested accommodations when I went back. The company decided they couldn't accommodate my needs and that was the end of it.

Yes right now I do have FMLA that I am using when I need to. The way my boss treats me now is just annoying.

It's sad and disgusting the way mi people are treated.
A friend from my support group actually works with disabled people for many years and has never told her boss she's bipolar.
She has a terrible hand tremor from lithium.
