So I'm thinking of taking a vacation somewhere in either may or July. Where would a 36 year old male like to travel solo to?

In the USA? Or willing to go to Europe? Or elsewhere? Single men can go ANYWHERE.
As for Europe, the Balkans are magic. Croatia is bit too touristy, but there is still Bosnia and Albania, Montenegro and Serbia... Or western Ukraine. Seriously. The western part is safe (so is the south-western coast), it is something different, the food is good, the people are great and the exchange rate makes it lolcheap.

What kind of stuff do you like to do? I think it depends on your hobbies/interests
For example, are you an outdoorsy person? If you like kayaking, i had a wonderful time kayaking and snorkeling in the Florida Keys. Also got to swim with the manatees and dolphins.

My girlfriend goes on purpose building trips. She visits India every year to help build a compound for Indian Women.
Or volunteer at a wildlife preserve hospital. Help a baby chimp or sloth. Simply pleasure? Can't beat Costa Rica. We specialize in fun. Surf lessons. Jungle trips. Open area cafes with tons of pretty girls. ( some for a price) I've been here 20 yrs. love it!!!!

My recommendation too is for Europe. As a solo traveller I have taken several river boat cruises and always had a magnificent time. The Danube is great, so is the Rhine.

When I was fifteen or so we took a family vacation to kaui (sp). Beautiful place. Happy memories. Didn't want to leave.

Also, Prague. Seriously, it's one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Almost bordering at kitch. Old Town Square looks like movie set for some fairy tale or historic movie.

I'd go to Africa. If I could find one, I'd go with a volunteer group for part of the time. Honestly, if I wasn't married and had no child, I'd go on my own in a heartbeat. I prefer traveling alone.

I've learned that I love pleasure cruises. I went to Jamaica, Mexico, and the Caymans last December and loved every minute of it. There is so much to do aboard the ship, and shore excursions are a lot of fun too. You can swim and snorkel, take a bus tour, shop till you drop, gamble, and enjoy some of the most fabulous food you've ever had. I hope I get to go again someday.

Depending on how many vac days you have you can go up the coasts, across the US via deserts or mountains, up to Vancouver, Montreal....not sure if there's any going to Alaska.
