I have been prescribed olanzapine 15ml. I am really worried about gaining weight on this. Has anyone been on this and NOT gained weight?

What were you prescribed it for?

If you feel you may need it... well meds can always be stopped if it becomes a problem. Don't let anybody to shame you into taking anything that you feel is doing more harm than a good to you. Fat and happy is a bumper sticker line that doesn't work for most.

I'm on it, weight gain can be prevented with regular exercise and a healthy diet .

I didn't gain anything it. It didn't do anything for me either but That's pretty rare I think. My pdoc said that if you are underweight you are more likely to gain than if you are already a bit overweight.

Zyprexa (regular) makes me gain weight. I gained 35lbs in 2 months when I was first on it!! And it had nothing to do with diet or exercise -- I didn't eat any differently or exercise any differently. It was purely the Zyprexa, which unfortunately isn't uncommon.

What I take now though is Zyprexa Zydis. For whatever reason, the Zydis version doesn't make me gain weight, so now when I need to be on Zyprexa, that's what I take because it's just as effective but for me has 0 side effects. Weight gain is the reason I went off Zyprexa in the first place.

So I guess all that rambling comes out to: If you gain weight from the regular stuff, dont' give up on it before you try Zydis. My pdoc said I'm not the only one she knows who gains weight from the regular but not from the Zydis, so there has to be something different about it.

The first time I went on Zyprexa, I gained 25 lbs in the first six weeks! I lost them when I went on Geodon, then regained them when I went back on Zyprexa for good two years ago. But my weight gain leveled off and I'm not excessively hungry or compelled to overeat anymore.

Wow, I'm getting pretty sick of your jabs at the "fat, happy and dead-eyed" consumers of antipsychotics. Many must take antipsychotics (and suffer the consequences) for good reasons, regardless of your personal circumstances or your respect for their diagnosis, treatment, or subsequent appearance. Pump your brakes.

Oh yeah, I'm not on Zyprexa right now but I have been a few times before, and it made me eat, and eat, and eat, and eat, and eat some more. Imagine your worst THC munchies and double it. I don't even remember if it made me any less crazy, but it made me eat.

I gained like 65 pounds in only a few months while on Zyprexa. Wish I was never prescribed this drug.

The OP and many others do not wish to gain weight and lose IQ or their spark. If any drug causes it, one should be able to come off it without being judged.

I am quoting a line that gets thrown at patients by their doctors, or spokespersons.

If you feel comfortable with gaining weight, that is your choice. But if one does not feel comfortable with it, they should not be shamed and bullied into accepting it.

So maybe pump YOUR brakes?

They're not shamed and bullied into gaining weight. The weight gain is a side effect of a medication they need to survive. I'm sorry that you can't understand the difference.
Thanks for this!

Who decides they "need it to survive"?

Do you understand that in some gaining weight can trigger a lots of issues? Lots of people are prone to eating disorders, body issues...

And it's okay to say gaining weight is NOT acceptable side effect and person should not be bullied into staying on drugs that cause this.

Again, it's up to them. To some it's okay... BUT if the person is not okay with it, they are likely toss the med at one point, thrusting a nasty withdrawal upon themselves. They can develop ED.

Much of what you say is true, but I hope you'll never understand what it is to depend on meds that make you "fat and dead-eyed."

It's a personal choice
Weight gain is a "no" no matter what for me
Others may feel the benefits outweigh the risks

Look, surely not every single med on market will make you dead eyed and robbed of any spark. If you have that side effect on some med... than it's not helping you, it's harming you and one should looking for better options, not accept the bad. If meds are supposed to help you, they should be helping you. If you are dragging yourself through life... they are likely not helping. Eyes are gateway to soul, eh.

You are hanging on one remark that was not even general, but it meant a chunk of certain group of people.

I was on it once for mania- and gained 15lbs in one week. Never took it again. I have type 1 and 2 diabetes in the family so that was not a side effect I wanted to get.

It DOES work very well in bringing you down from mania.

Lithium makes me lose weight. APs effect everyone differently.
