Has anyone had a therapist that keeps telling you where you're gonna be in the upcoming years or who you're going to be?

Mine keeps telling me that I'm gonna be married and more independent.
Maybe, I don't want to be married in the upcoming years.... or ever

Says I will be like my "normal" friends who are married, and have good jobs.
I am not strong enough to keep a 40 hour a week job, it gives me anxiety and causes break downs..

Idk, it just seems like they are trying too much saying I'm better off than their other patients... How would they know? She doesn't know what I deal with on a day to day basis...

Just curious, thanks for your input

No, I never had that issue when I was seeing a T. But that must be irritating! *hugs* I would maybe voice to your T how you feel about it.

No i haven't heard projected happiness. Mine just listened to me said they believed me and helped me in ways to make change happen for me. They dealt with life in the moment which i needed and a plan for growth but nothing like what you are saying ....tc

I haven't experienced this either. The only advise I have is to clear the air with your therapist. If they don't consider your feelings then you need a second opinion. It might be hard, but you need to trust your therapist in order for anything positive to come of it.

I've never had a therapist predict my future. Maybe, he or she is trying to let you know these things are possible. Has the therapist asked what you'd like for yourself in the future?

That would make me a bit uncomfortable especially if my dreams for myself weren't even the same as there's. Like they're "forcing" me to go in a direction that I didn't want to go. Like, is this their goal for each patient?! If it's the same stuff at every visit, it may even be a deal breaker and time to find a new t. That would annoy me quite a bit.

I always ask people what kind of therapy are they into because therapist' intervention & attitude strongly depends on their views and their therapeutic approach.
It sounds like motivational-coach thing which is not the classic dynamic therapy.
Did you set goals in therapy? What were they?
How long are u into the therapy with this therapist?

It also sounds like she may be acting out of her own fantasy about herself as a therapist, if you agree with her idea, she'll be "A Good Therapist", which is not what YOU need.

If your main goal was; "help getting married & 'good' job" then maybe she's trying to tell you that she believes in you, she believes she can help you achieve what YOU WANT

Different approaches to psychotherapy

Thank you everyone for your input! The problem with the place I go is they don't allow you to switch therapists and the pdoc you see is in the same practice as the therapists. I've switched once and it was very hard process for them to listen. I suppose I should try again though, or even find a new doctor and therapist.
