I (we) moved from Miami after 45 yrs to this polite town two years ago.
In Miami, people wear shades at night and have the gansta look. Stone faces almost like NY. Everybody wants to be badass. Get in front of people, cut people off in the highway. Pick fights. Pretend you're not there, etc. This town I'm in now, is the cemetery of happiness. There is not a soul outside after 9PM. That's when people get up in Miami. On top of that, everybody is extremely polite. People wish good morning, good evening, "did you find everything you were looking for". What? "do you prefer paper or plastic?" WHAT?. I never new people used paper bags anymore. You drive thru a street and people wave at you. I thought they were making fun of me, Now I wave too, but with the stone face. These people actually SMILE!!!. Your neighboors help you fix the house. For FREE. No ****!!!. My cars are open, my door is never locked. The reason is I want something to happen. Like someone tries to steal something. Or a coconut falls in their heads. The most eventful thing in the last few days was a woodpecker. A Noise!!!. I don't know how much more I can take of this goddie-good thing. But this can't be a bipolar frendly town. This is not a town. It's a fairy tale. Is your town bipolar friendly?. Mine stinks. |

I live in a fairly good sized city and most are just like you say ... I find if you expect and look for bad manners and evil you will find it ... if you look for the good in people I also believe you will find that ... more a matter of your mindset than fact .. is my town bp friendly ... probabily not .. but it is my problem because I am afraid to stand up and ask ...

I don't know about necessarily bipolar friendly, but my little corner of the woods is pretty decent. I think I'm probably one of the younger home owners here because I feel like it's mostly older and/or retired individuals from what I do see. Otherwise I don't see anyone. But when I do I get a polite wave and a "how are you today?" The people in the drive through speak clearly and say may I and thank you. I actually have fallen asleep a few times with my door unlocked, by accident, and didn't feel too bothered by it. I love it here, but it's also like...what is this place? Just a little further north from here it's every man, woman and child for themselves!

My town is bipolar-friendly in that we have a support group for people with mood disorders, a group for mental illness in general, a group for schizophrenics, one for Asperger's, etc. We have a very active community. There's a march for schizophrenia every year. There's going to be a play this Friday about mental illness put on by survivors. It's hard to find a good psychiatrist, tho. A lot of them are burnt out.

If you weren't a complete nutter, you wouldn't stay where I live. It feels nice. Very nice. Lots of acceptance. No pride.
People are not too nice and polite. More honest. I like that: rough edges. But not dangerous or anything, in comparison. Really pleasant.

Objectively speaking, it's as friendly as most places. People are the same everywhere for the most part. Good people everywhere, crappy people everywhere.

Hmmm. Not sure what constitutes BP friendly.
![]() ![]() Maybe defining it is a matter of whether we find a place conducive to "behaving" or to indulging our leanings (our natural habitat? Lol). I've lived both kinds of places, and prefer city. BP-wise, probably on account of a few different things. #1, relative anonymity (yes, please!). I heard someone say something funny about a small town "you know it's a small town when everybody knows your business before you've even gotten back to your house". Haha. Also prefer city on account of services available. So I would say yes, BP friendly, insofar as it goes. Like Tigger, it's not like I stand up and ask(!) But it works for me. ![]() P.s. One thing you seem to allude to is the aggressiveness of the local population. That's something I kind of have to watch. To be somewhere really mean would bring out the worst in me, and I'd be constantly launching, which wouldn't be good for anyone. ![]() |

I live in a city of 2 million. It's fairly Bipolor friendly as long as you stay away from the cops. Used to be a "keep it weird" atmosphere until it got too big and too corporate. Once people get in their cars tho it's rage city on the streets.

My sister lives in the middle of nowhere like that. It's enviro-shock for her visiting here, especially because highways and airport (and trains, and buses, and and and) are close at hand. To me, it is white noise. Especially the highway. I love the white noise of the highway! |

It's like I'm been punish for all the bullcrap I said. The worse part here is that it's all populated. But it's like everybody left. Then you're afraid to make noise. We have canals in the backyards and water carries sound. Sometimes I hear people talking from two blocks away. Imagine living in a place that is dead and you can't even make noise. |

It's kind of funny on the city noises, pirilin, seeing how the silence of the town is so striking to you. Maybe it's like one of those things you hate at the time, only to realize you miss it when it's not there. ![]() Planes and highways -- all good. But there are a lot of sirens too. Not a fan of those... (Or neighbor kids. But ya don't have to be in a city for that(!)) |

I like politeness but everything winding down at 9pm would drive me crazy! I'd question whether I was on earth if I only saw white faces.

Hmmm brings up an interesting thought. Are some towns more highly BP populated than others? Is it something in the water? I think in every corner of the earth there is some amount of acceptance and stigma about it. There is a hospital a city next to me that I was in IP at twice and there were plenty of people with BP there and an awesome support group held in the same hospital that I wish I still attended. Now that I bring it up, I just visited the hospitals site a wk ago in search of that same support group with no luck. A funny side story, my grandma volunteers at the hospitals gift shop and I kept my IP stay a secret from my family. A week after I got out I went to visit her at the shop and she enthusiastically introduced me to man that worked in the hospital. He turns around to look at me and it ended up being a nurse from IP lol. Awkward much?? We both acted like we didn't know each other. |

I call my suburban town Homedepotville. In So FL they say you have to go north to go south. And they say all the people who live in So. FL have been thrown out of somewhere else! Don't under estimate sleepy towns, though, they have Eyes Wide Shut parties in their houses ;-)
Hilarious post, pirlin! And speaking of Eyes Wide Shut, just a funny aside... I recently remembered that I saw that movie when it came out in a theater in Palm Beach together with Donald Trump. He was there with Marla Maples and his posse.

I like it here enough.
I wish there were more places to go and more things to do at night during the week, other than go out drinking. But, whatever I guess. I live in WI. Everyone is a frickin drunk around here!

Lol pirilin! No taxi service for drunks around here though. Probably why there's so many OWIs.
