This year I began to watch "Legends of Tomorrow". I love the character Snart on the show and looked the actor up on Facebook. His name is Wentworth Miller. I found that in 2013 he came out as gay. About 2 weeks ago it was all over the news that he "came out" about his depression. His posts on Facebook are truly inspirational. He's a eloquent writer and posts almost daily about how to deal with depression. He talks a lot about self care. I haven't been doing my self care lately and I needed to be reminded. Today's post (April 7) is about silencing the voices in your head that tell you you're not good enough. Or tell you you're ugly or fat or useless or whatever. He talks about how he deals with it. His post helped me a lot and I shared it on Facebook with 2 friends who are depressed. I know this is the bipolar forum but I'm BP2 and have more depression than hypomania. Mr. Miller helps me cope just by reading his posts. I wish there were more people like him on Facebook.

I spend most of my time depressed too. Even manic I have a weird self abusive, unhappy slant. Thanks for sharing about W Miller. I remember when he came out. I am bi or lesbian depending on the day. It can be very risky for an actor to come out especially if as we now know about him that he was battling the demon of depression.
If you like supernatural tv show Jared Padalecki is also very vocal and honest about his struggles w anxiety and depression. He sells t-shirts with the slogan Always Keep Fighting on them. Money raised goes to mental health charities.

Does anyone else have a person who inspires you? Friends, family, people who write books or are on TV or in movies. Perhaps even a fictional character? I'd love to hear about them and why you find them inspirational.

I believe Wentworth Miller also played Michael Schofield on "Prison Break." That is where i know him from. Glad to know he is such an enlightened dude and sets such a good example.

When i was young i idolized the head coach of my gymnastics club who was very talented and assertive and tough but fair and had a lot of integrity. I'm 50 now and i've rethought my feelings towards her as it was she who engendered a lot of the dysfunction i have re my weight as she wanted us all to be thin. Thinnest was the best, and i was the best. Now i'm paying for it as a middle-aged adult about 70 pounds overweight. If i'd kept a more indifferent attitude towards my weight i might not be so effed up now.

Great question!

I had to give this one some thought. I have encountered and watched some inspiring people. I have to say the one that stands out right now is my therapist, J. Maybe a month ago, a fellow church member was diagnosed with a very painful nerve/brain condition that has no cure and not a lot of treatment beyond pain killers. I was trying to explain it to J and she said conversationally, "yeah, I have that." Then, she returned the conversation to me.
Suddenly some things made sense like that I had noticed her wincing. From what I understand from my church friend. The condition is agonizing, will never go away, and can worsen at any time.
So, all this past year every time she winced she was experiencing severe pain. Wait. Who wants to listen to someone else talk about their problems when she is suffering? The last thing I want to do when I am hurting mentally or physically is listen to someone else and help them sort out their problems.
But she does. One of her main areas of interest in counseling is chronic pain sufferers.
I can't imagine. But it gives me hope. That helping others climb out of despair might help alleviate my pain. That there is hope and normalcy despite a rotten diagnosis and sometimes painful life.
Thanks for this!

My favorite superhero is Superman, although I don't like the dark, troubled Superman. I favor the more fun iterations.

I guess my most recent hero has been Walter White from "Breaking Bad." He went from being a chump to being so powerful. He bacame amoral towards the end and i don't admire that part but he took responsibility for it all in the last ep where he admits he did it all for himself, that he liked it, that he was good at it and he was really alive.

I also admire the leader of my support group as she is very active and physically fit and has a big heart and forgives and includes everyone. She's got a lot of energy and works really hard and is an excellent leader.
Thanks for this!
