I've read many sources and also had a psychiatrist once recommend Fish Oil (or Flax Oil) for bipolar.

Has anyone who takes it regularly seen any results? How much fish oil/ flax oil do you take?

Thanks!

I take 1200 mg fish oil caps daily for cholesterol and triglycerides. I don't think it does anything for my bipolar though.

I've done fish oil and flax and neither helped me at all. But it can't hurt to try. Fish has more of what you need. If you keep it in the freezer you can avoid fish burps.

My pdoc wants me taking fish oil too. He explained it to me last week but now I forget why. Something to do with the brain. I have GERD n fish oil aggravates that so we talked about eating sardines as I like them. He also talked about eating chia but I decided against that which led to our discussion about the sardines.

I used o take fish oil years ago for other reasons at the time I didn't
know I was bipolar so I have no idea if it helped or not.
I eat a lot of fish and I eat sardines pretty often I love them.
Fish and fish oil have many health benefits so maybe it could
help with bipolar.

I think, in terms of using it as a nutritional aid or supplement for overall health has some promise to it. Fish oil, Flaxseed oil, Krill oil, etc are rich in omega 3 fatty acids which may help improve dopamine and serotonin levels. These neurotransmitters are usually low during depressive episodes which is responsible for the low mood. As far as manic episodes goes, it won't even come close to being effective. The dosage I'm not sure about. I used Soleil Krill products before and if I remember correctly, its two capsules at a time, twice a day. In my opinion, I don't think using these supplements solely will dramatically affect a Bipolar diagnosis for the better. I think more can and needs to be done. So if the aim is overall general health, then I'd give these supplements a thumbs up, but as a treatment possibility specifically, definitely not.

I took it for a few months a couple of different times but it didn't do anything for my mood.

I do remember that omega 3s help brain cells somehow, not sure if it has something to do with memory or not. As I said previously I don't remember exactly what he said. It doesn't have anything to do with mood stability. He also has me taking NAC which is a suppliment N Acetylcholine. It too is supposed to help the brain some way. I buy it at the natural food store. I don't necessarily notice any differences taking these. My pdoc reads up on things a lot and since I have been on medication so long and will continue to do so, I will take suppliments on the hope they do help. By the way the VA recignuzes meducal needs fir fish oil prescribed by a primary care doctor and will provide patients with it but not for bipolar or prescribed by my pdoc, so if I decide to take the capsules I have to buy it. Oh well. As I said I will go the sardine route.

I take 1200mg of fish oil for high cholesterol and triglycerides. No idea about helping BP. I put flax oil in my oatmeal, when I remember to. I'll eat sardines. But isn't krill endangered now?

It's probably good for overall health, but not specific to bp.
