Yeah, most of NY is expensive. Buffalo (where I lived last year) is dirt cheap. I rented a 3br for $715/month! But it's also an absolutely horrid city so...there are trade offs.
Even if I do get approved, I'm still going to have to work some...both for the money and for my sanity... |

I wasn't able to work at all when I applied for disability - and I don't work now, but I volunteer three times a week.

I'm working now (although my BP is affecting it big time), and I honestly don't even want to go on disability, but I'm barely able to hold a part time job much less a full time job...but I like working, and always have which is why I say I'll need to work even if I get disability.

I hope mine doesn't take long...or that my parents will continue to support me financially while I work part time.

About 5 years ago I was approved for a "closed period of disability" which means I was mentally ill for a certain amount of time. I was denied first (took MONTHS to get a response) and then got an attorney recommended to me from a friend. Either my attorney was lazy or the gov and dr offices were slow but I didn't get a hearing for almost two years. I got a back pay check and that's it. Now a days, and 2 failed jobs later, I'm going for SSD again. I'm going with the same attorney because he has all my previous records still. I have 13 years and 4 hospital stays of records so I'm sure that took up the majority of the time to collect. I already know that this could take up to two years again. From what I've learned about the process, make sure you are compliant with meds and a T because the gov wants to see that you're working on getting better and seeking propper help. For example, I have an eating disorder and when I first applied I weighed 100lbs, but when I went for my hearing I weighed 110 and this pleased the judge to see I was getting better. This time around for filing, my attorney didn't even want to touch it until I've been in therapy for 3 months! But I expected a denial so I insisted on doing the app now. You're going to have to pinch your pennies and live cheap!! Get on every gov program you can to help because this is a long process. |

I never miss an appointment with my T or pdoc, and other than a brief time when I was on Latuda while my ED was in full swing, I've always been compliant with meds (and even then I would take the Latuda, but I'd throw it up half the time because there was nothing in my stomach).
Fortunately, I know how to live cheap. For a year and a half I was paying about $1000/month for rent and I was only getting paid $10.50/hour. That left very little wiggle room. |

So it's been over 30 days since I requested my confirmation number to be able to check my status online, and they said when I called that it could take up to 30 days to get it in the mail. Now what?

Call your local SS office. Mine at least were very helpful throughout the process.

When I called before they weren't helpful at all. Just said they would mail my number, and I haven't gotten it yet even though it's been longer than they said it would.

I applied for SSDI back in February. Just got a letter today saying I have to see their psychologist. Is this a good thing? What can I expect from this appointment? Anyone else have to do this? It says it can take up to 3 hours.

I didn't have to do this so I can't tell you what to expect. I do know that I read that you should absolutely make sure you go to the appointment no matter how inconvenient or whatever comes up. I think that it is not a good or bad thing, they just want more evaluation than your medical records provide. It will probably be similar to seeing a therapist or pdoc for a first visit as they'll be trying to determine your diagnosis through their eyes and the severity, impairments, etc. Just be honest and you will be fine.
