Hi!

My psychiatrist wants me to stop taking Seroquel, but I can't live without it.....

I have a hard time falling asleep. No matter how tired I am, my brain just won't shut down. I just lay and after some time I tend to get anxiety, sometimes almost panic attaks. I need a med that makes me relax and able to be calm enough to go to sleep. Seroquel does that, but my pdoc says it makes people depressed? so she wants me to stop. I want to stop because I keep gaining weight. I tried a week without Seroquel and I could follow a diet and lost 1 lbs in 6 days.
My other problems is joint and muscle pain - probably fibromyalgia. With Seroquel I can sleep the entire night without waking up in pain.

Any ideas for an alternative?
(without the weight gain / increased appetite side effects)

(About me: I'm newly diagnosed with bipolar 2 - not sure I agree with the diagnosis though.... I'm on Lithium (0.9 plasma thing...), Lamotrigine (50 mg) and starting to feel better. I've struggled with depression for 14 months now and tried a lot of ADs without effect. Not sure I've ever been hypomanic - but my psychiatrist and psychologist seems to think so.... But we can all agree that I am way more on the depressive side!!)

Since 2007 I have been taking clozapine, neurontin, xanax and a year ago added hydrocodone and they help me sleep much better. They were not initially prescribed for sleep but I found that they were effective.

I have bipolar and ptsd and never had persistent insomnia until perimenopause.

Meds that help me fall asleep... benadryl, Lunesta, Klonopin. My pdoc prescribes all three (well, approved benadryl) so long as I get six or seven hours of sleep each night.

I'm on clozaril which is supposed to be extremely sedating but isn't for me. So I take gabapentin (1200 mg) at bedtime (and can take 200 more if I need it). I also take 2 mg of klonopin at bedtime and 25 mg of topamax (which is nothing but seems to help calm me so I sleep better). This works better than anything else I've ever taken. (I also have hydroxyzine if nothing else works). Sleep has always been a HUGE issue for me and it is so wonderful to know that when I lay day I'm going to sleep for a long time (although we're still adjusting meds and I often sleep too much).

I take a tizanidine and a 50 mg hydroxyzine close to bed time. Works like a charm. Good luck.

I've been taking 10 mg Ambien a night for over 10 years. It has scary side effects for some people, but I've never had a problem with it.

klonopin and benadryl both work for me, though I don't have regular sleep problems. I take the benadryl if I feel like I am having an allergic reaction that is preventing me from sleeping (itchy skin) and I try to avoid taking the klonopin because I'd rather use it when I am awake...

I switched from seroquel to saphris to sleep. Saphris is also weight neutral and has made me very stable. I'm doing the best I have in years actually

Zyprexa (dose 10 mg and up; lower doses aren't sedating enough)
Clozapine, not sure by what dose it made me sleep (I'm taking 200 mg and that works)
PRN: Ativan, usually 1 mg works, but sometimes I need 2 mg.

Latuda has really helped me with both sleep and depression without weight gain.

It just takes a lot of trying different meds. Everyone responds differently.

Saphris also worked well for me for sleep with no weight gain, but I found it too hard to get up in the morning.

I've used Vistaril in the past and that helped. I'm currently using Restoril and that is helping as well.

Ambien helped me but that wasn't something I want to be on long term so I take seroquel 300mg at night now and it helps a lot

I used to take Benadryl but it interacts with emsam so I can't. The only thing I take now is valerian root, which is an herb that has calming effects. It works well but I can tell it wouldn't work if I were hypomanic.

I used to take trazadone too but stopped because of interactions with emsam. That worked well too.

wildflowerchild-have you tried hydroxyzine? Emsam safe and works well. I honestly didn't know benadryl wasn't; I know I've been given it in the hospital with Emsam but generally avoid it because it makes me hyper (which is why I only got it once or twice in the hospital). I've had hydroxyzine scripts all along without anyone raising issues.

On the other hand I wouldn't be allowed valerian because we agreed that since they don't test herbals it is best to not try them. I think my pdoc was being very cautious because I get so sensitive to meds though and if there is a risk of interaction we generally assume I'm more likely to get it. Herbals came up as potential migraine treatments and we decided no to them but did agree to some supplements.

I'm BP and used to take Depakote. Now I take lithium.

Not sure if it fits your profile, but Depakote always made me tired.

I asked for hydroxizine and my Pdoc said there was an interaction risk. I'm not sure if there's an official interaction between Benadryl and emsam, I just know if I take it now I get terrible restless leg syndrome whereas I didn't before the emsam.

I took 2 valium years ago and it knocked me right out. It was given to me by a friend. I doubt they'd prescribe such a thing now a days, but it sure did work. I have Ativan and it doesn't work close to the way Valium did.

Trazadone has an advantage over benzos; you won't have to take more of it to get the same desired effect.

Benzos cause you to become physically dependant. Can't take them daily. trazadone I think it pretty safe and reasonably effective. Nothing like the Valium mind you, but they help.

Oh wauw!
Thank you so much for sharing!

I am overwhelmed by how many different meds that can be used.... I will certainly look into some of the meds and see what my pdoc thinks
